franciscan monastery Franciscan monastery
Franciscan monastery in Liptovský Mikuláš, located in the village Okoličné, is a historical monument with rich past and architectural elements. This complex includes the Gothic Church of Saint Peter of Alkantara, which developed on the site of the originally separate Gothic Church of Saints Cosmos and Damian in the years 1476-1492.
The history of the monastery is closely reunited with the Okoličáni family, who were owners of the village Okoličné. The first mention of this village comes from 1248 and for a long time was under the administration of the noble family Okoličanské. In 1435, when the Husiti burned down the village, the inhabitants moved with them. Michal Okoličani will establish a parish and start building a church and monastery in 1480. This action was supported by King Matthias Korvin through his family name Matthew Czeczei.
Architecturally, the Franciscan complex differs with its three-ship hall structure with its long polygonal shrine. The main ship and the sideships are covered with a steep gable roof, and above the church there is a tower with an onion roof in the Baroque style. The facade is decorated with figurative symbols and Gothic windows. The walls of the church cleave 11 windows in Gothic style, and the polygonal apside contains four three-pole Gothic windows.
The monastery's interior is barricaded. There are pulpits with statues of 4 evangelists, benches and altars from 1721. The main altar of the Virgin Mary was created by Master Paul of Levoča, but the original altar was preserved only in fragments. In the chapel there is a baroque altar Piety and on the south side of the main boat there is a baroque altar of the Crucifixion.
The monastery was undergoing several dramatic changes. In 1565, the church and monastery were sold to the Gospels, but Franciscan monks returned at the request of John Okoličani in the late 17th century. The reform in 1744 brought a Baroque remodeling of the church and transformed into St. Peter's from Alkantara.
Today, the monastery is part of the monument area under the number of the ÚZPF 353, which also includes the church and garden. His visit offers an opportunity to understand the influence of various epochs on city architecture and society.

We welcome you to the heart of Liptov region, Liptovský Mikuláš, where history meets daily life. You stand right in front of one of the most important spiritual and historical points of this city - the Franciscan monastery complex. Before you go any further, let's try to stop for a moment and just feel the atmosphere of the place you're in. Do you feel the special weight of time coming out of these walls? This monastery is not just a set of buildings, it is a living witness of the centuries that have passed by and a direct reflection of the spiritual life that shaped this city and the entire region over many generations. Look at the entire structure and see its presence in the surroundings. There's something monumental, but at the same time calm, which invites you to an internal arrangement.
In order to understand what you see in front of us, we must go back to the past in our ideas, namely the end of the 15th century. Just then, in 1480, a chapter began to be written that changed the face of this place forever. The construction of the church and monastery was initiated by Michal Okoličáni. This figure was not merely a builder but a person with great ambitions, who perceived the importance of creating solid spiritual foundations for the local community. However, construction was not possible without strong support, so Michal Okoličani became associated with one of the most important rulers of the time. He received support from King Matthias Corvinus, who was then viewed as a prominent protector of culture and religion. This royal patronage has given the building not only material security but also a specific status, which is reflected in the importance of the entire complex even today.
Now, when you look at the architecture of this complex, pay attention to its overall structure. It is not just a random structure, but a precisely designed space that carries Gothic elements. If you look at the church itself, which is part of the monastery, note its elevated and harmonious form. It's St. Peter's church from Alkantara. However, it is important to realize that what you see today is not the first miracle that has taken place here. This Gothic church was developed in the place of the original, older Gothic church, which was dedicated to the Holy Cosmos and Damians. It is fascinating how history layers on itself - new buildings grow up on the foundations of older ones, keeping the sanctified character of the place.
Now see the architecture you have right in front of your eyes. The whole complex is characterized by a three-ship hall structure. What does this mean in practice for you as a visitor? When you move in the interior in the future, this type of construction gives you a feeling of uniform, size and open space. Unlike other types of churches where boats are clearly separated, the indoor church creates a sense of continuity and space width, which is typical of a gothic style that tried to guide the sight and mind of man towards the heavens. See this geometry, see how the lines of the building intersect and create a harmonious whole that acts in a stable and lofty way.
Speaking of the personalities that shaped this place, we cannot forget the very presence of the Franciscans. Although the specific names of many individuals were lost in times past, their spirit and their strict, but kind, lifestyle remained written in every stone of this monastery. It was Franciscan spirituality aimed at humility and closeness to the people that transformed this complex from mere building to the center of the community. Michal Okoličani and King Matej Corvini have laid the foundations, but the work of many anonymous builders and later the lives of many monks who lay here are what gave this place his true soul.
There is also one interesting thing that you should be interested in looking at this monastery. It's the hidden continuity we've already mentioned. Imagine it as a time layer. Under your feet, under the contemporary church of Saint Peter of Alkantara, there is a trace of another world - the church of St. It's like an archaeological story that takes place right under your eyes. This transition from one sacred place to another, from one cult to another, shows how religious and social needs have changed, but the desire to have something permanent and sacred at this point in Liptovsky Mikulas remained unchanged. It is fascinating how architecture can adapt to new needs while respecting what was previously there.
Now that you have a slightly clearer idea of what you see in front of you, about who stood here and who was building here, you can continue your visit with a new insight. Get carried away by this historical story. Look at the details you will be able to capture, see the silence and tranquillity this monastery offers in the middle of the city. Every piece of this architecture, every detail of this three-ship structure, is part of something much bigger - something that lasts centuries.
We wish you a pleasant sequel to discovering the beauty and secrets of Liptovsky Mikulas. May this visit bring you not only knowledge, but also a moment of peace and wonder about what people in the past have been able to build. Goodbye.
