Liptov Castle, also known as the Sielnicky Castle or Liptovský Old Castle, is a ruin located in the village Liptovská Sielnica in the Žilina region. It lies on Mount Sestrč with an altitude of 99.9 metres in the Choč Mountains and is one of the highest castles in Slovakia and one of the highest in Central Europe. The castle was first documented in writing in 1262 when King Belo IV. built it on the site of an ancient castle from the 1st century BC.

Architecturally, it glassed from several parts, including residential towers, tanks, and two branches. Its original function was defensive, and during its history the castle was destroyed several times and then expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. Since 1340 he served as the seat of Liptov County, which underlines his administrative role in the region. In 1431 - 1434 the castle was occupied by the Hussite troops and in 1454 it went into the hands of Pongrác, who reconstructed and strengthened it. After suppressing the antiroyal plot in 1471 the castle was conquered by King Matthias Corvinus and let him destroy it completely, which constructed only part of the wall under the overhang of the grass soil.

Ownership and administration of Liptov Castle have been subject to change several times in history. After Pongrac, who strengthened him, the castle was conquered by Matej Korvin, which illustrates its strategic importance and opportunities for various powerful rival forces. Castle manor originally included extensive areas, but gradually decreased after building other castles like Likava and Liptovský Hrádok.

In the 1980s archaeological research was carried out on the castle site, which helped reconstruct its gradual development until its demise. The remains of two tanks, a palace, towers, as well as numerous shots and blacksmith material were discovered under the castle wall on the western edge of the area. These findings provide insight into life and the defence strategies that have been used in this area.

Today the Liptov Castle is publicly accessible and its area is under the protection of the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic with the number ÚZPF 10056. The whole terrain is traversed by hiking trails, including the red-marked route Vlachy - Havránok - Bukovina - Sedlo pod Kráľova and the yellow-marked route Kalameny - Sedlo pod Kráľova. These trails allow visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings.

Liptov Castle is an example of medieval architecture and history of Slovakia. Its importance depends on its strategic location and role in regional behaviour and defence. Visiting this castle offers an opportunity to learn about the history of Slovakia and life in the Middle Ages, thus becoming part of every traveler interested in historical monuments.

Welcome to Liptov Castle. You are standing in a place where history meets the inhospitable beauty of nature and where every stone trail tells a story about power, defense and strategic important movement in the heart of Liptov. Now that you look around, you are likely to be immediately addressed by just how this monumental object dominates the surroundings. Although the remains of ancient glory are now visible, their presence in this land is indisputable and has an unprecedented effect on you. Feel the atmosphere - the feeling that you are standing right in front of one of the most important points in our country.

The look you have in front of you is not just a look at the old walls. It's a look at the traces of ancient civilizations. If we try to penetrate deeper below these stones, we will find that the history of this place is much older than it might seem at first sight. Even in the first century before our era there was a castle. Imagine this site more than two thousand years ago - already then people understood that this place, this elevated place, offers perfect protection and control over the entire area. Although they do not know the exact details of who built this first castle, we can only imagine life in these ancient times.

Gradually, however, time moved and the fort was changing. The first hard, documented moment in the history of this place came in 1262. Then there was a turning point left in history by King Bela IV. He has decided that this strategic place must be secured by a strong fortress. The king perceived the importance of this site and had the castle built on the site of an ancient fortification site, which would serve as an invincible gate to this part of the country. This act was a clear signal that Liptov became a key point for royal power.

Now that you look at the architecture you see in front of you, you will not look for perfect artwork, but rather raw, functional power. See how these remains have adapted to natural mountain terrain. The castle was not built just to stand there, but it was designed to exploit every advantage of this rocky position. Although the unknown architect has not sent us his name into history, his brilliantness is visible in how the castle was incorporated into the mountain panorama. Look at the rocks and the remains of the walls - there is a curse of the centuries that the castle has endured.

As time went by, the importance of this place was further strengthened. Since 1340 Liptovský castle has had a completely different role. It was no longer just a military fortress, but it became the seat of Liptov County. This means that the centre of power, administration and decision-making has moved here. Imagine all those processes, all those legal decisions and all the important moments that happened here, when this castle was the heart of the whole region. It was the point where the interests of the nobility, kings and inhabitants of the whole Liptov region met.

Let me tell you something really special now, which may surprise you. When you ask about the uniqueness of this place, you will find the answer in its height. Liptov Castle is not just a castle building. It is one of the highest castles in the whole territory of Slovakia and one of the highest castles in the whole Central Europe. When you stand up here and look up towards the rest of it, see that high-rise dominance. This position gave him not only an unprecedented defense advantage but also symbolic power - the castle was almost in heaven, constantly overseeing everything under it.

Despite what you see, there is much unknown in this place. The names of architects who worked these stones are unknown, and the exact chronology of all the changes that have taken place here is unknown. This uncertainty, this snore of history, gives Liptov Castle its mystical and fascinating atmosphere. Any stone you see here can hide secrets that no one has ever discovered.

Now that you have gained a basic picture of what is standing before you, we invite you to continue your next discovery. Let yourself be carried away by this feeling of greatness and try to survive in the spirit the times when kings here decided the fates of the countries and when Liptov County ruled all its territory. Feel the silence of this location and try to hear the echoes of the ancient past. Thank you for your company and we wish you a pleasant and inspiring stay in this historic country.

For children

Imagine being eight years old and living at a time when there were no phones, cars, or light from an electric light bulb. It's 1250 and before you, the door opens to a world that's exactly 776 years old. At that time they stood on the peaks of the mountains, not stone walls, but wooden palisades and walls that could quickly be assembled and burned even more quickly. It was at that time that the world changed from wood to stone that one of the most admirable castles was built in Liptov.
