Lietava Castle, also known as Lietava Castle, is located in the village of Lietava in the Žilina region in Slovakia. The castle area lies 10 km from the town of Žilina and is located on the eastern edge of Súľovské vrchy, near Mount Cibulník. The area of the castle is situated between the village of Lietava and Lietavská Svinná and is 635 meters above sea level.

The castle was built on the rocky ridge of Súľovské vrchy. In the last quarter of the 13th century, it was acquired by the Balas family, who built a tower and fortification. The castle went through the hands of several owners, such as Matúš Čák Trenčiansky at the beginning of the 14th century, later King Zigmund at the end of the 14th century and Pavel Kiniža (1475 - 1494), which made several construction adjustments to the nem. In the early 16th century, the castle was acquired by Nicholas Kostka, whose daughter Barbora married František Turzo.

The castle was Architecturally proud of the large prism tower and fortification, which followed the rugged shape of the terrain. On its eastern side was located Gothic chapels. The first front yard surrounds the castle core and is accessible through the prism entrance tower with a gate. On the northwest corner there is a round bastion, a cylindrical tower and a polygonal and a round tower.

After the death of Imrich Turz (1621), the estate was divided into heirs. In 1641 they lost interest in the area due to property disputes, the castle belonged to the composite. The description from 1698 states that it is not inhabited and there is only an archive that was later transferred to the Orava Castle. Between 1870 and 1873, the property was bought by Baron Popper.

Today, Lietava Castle stands as a symbol of historical wealth and architectural skills. Its walls with window openings, entrances and architectural details, stone profiled consoles of the former arcier, circumferential atics, cannon and key shootings are preserved to a considerable height. In the former chapel there were still run stone Gothic ribs.

The castle is still freely accessible ruins, outside objects that are currently being repaired. In the middle part of the castle it operates an exposition dedicated to history, object owners and archaeological findings. The current owner - the civic association, which acquired the castle ownership in 2008, addresses its sensitive renovation and preservation so that it can be used as a tourist attraction. In 2009, the castle building was listed on the most threatened monuments of the world for 2010, which is published by the US World Monument Fund (WMF).

Access to the castle Lietava is possible from several directions. From the village of Lietava, part of Lietava, Majer after the sign takes about 35 minutes. The road takes about 40 minutes from Lietavská Svinná village to the mark. Access is also possible from neighbouring villages such as Podhorie.

Lietava castle stands as a monument on the boundary of historical and natural wealth. Its preservation and restoration are a challenge for current administrators who are trying to keep its history alive for future generations. Visiting the castle offers an opportunity to see Slovak historical architecture and beautiful panoramic views of the surroundings.

You can see where history meets the inhospitable beauty of nature. You stand right in front of Lietava Castle, a monumental monument that has dominated this country since the centuries. Before you begin your journey, bow your head down and just feel the atmosphere of this place for a moment. You will feel the strength of time and the immobility of the rocks that make up this place. Look up, the rocky ridge of the Súľovské vrchy Mountains, which before you the poles to the sky. It is there, at that inaccessible height, that the heart of this castle bastion is located. This castle is not only a building built on the ground, it is part of the rock on which it stands. See how his silhouette is portrayed against the sky and harmoniously associated with the harsh, natural profile of the mountains.

When we begin to look deeper into the past, we must go back to when the region was not yet as peaceful as we know it today. Lietava Castle was founded in the last quarter of the thirteenth century. At that time, this strategic point was crucial for controlling the surrounding terrain. Building a fortress on such a difficult, rocky place was a huge challenge for the builders of the day. They had to keep fighting difficult terrain to create a fortification that would be almost invincible. This castle was built to control the surrounding roads and protect the reigning rulership, which at that time meant absolute necessity.

Let us now move on to those who actually controlled this place and changed history. Lietava Castle was not just a fortress, it was the home of powerful families and prominent personalities. The first owners of these walls were the Balash family, which laid the foundations of power here. Later, at the beginning of the 14th century, Lietava castle became part of the reign of one of the most important men of the then country. Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, a man whose name has been registered in history as a symbol of power and influence, perceived his strategic strength here. Under his rule, the castle represented an important point in his vast rule.

Later, however, the fates of the castle changed and Lietava became part of the royal reign. By the end of the 14th century, King Zigmund himself ruled here. The fact that the castle belonged directly to the king tells us all about its immense political and military value. It was not just an ordinary castle, it was a symbol of royal interest in this strategic point in the heart of the country. In the later period, namely in the second half of the 15th century, Paul Kiniž also worked here. Each of these eras has left a mark in this place, even though we see it today only in the silent stone walls and the very location of the castle.

Now see the architecture of this monument. Although time has seldom changed the face of this castle bastion, we still feel its original size and dominant character. The castle was Architecturally proud of its influence on the rock ridge. Note how the architecture of the castle adapts to the natural shape of the terrain. The castle is not just built on a rock, it connects with it in one unit. Feel the force by which these stone structures deny themselves a rock comb. Every stone you see here has been brought to this height with enormous effort to form a fortress that can resist enemies and enemy elements.

It is this unusual and inaccessible location that can surprise you by looking at this castle. Lietava Castle is not just a building, it is a guard of the Súľov Hills. It's fascinating to think about how the fates of powerful kings and ordinary people with the immobility of these rocks have flown through the centuries. This combination of human efforts and untanned natural forces creates a unique atmosphere that you can feel at every turn in this place. It is a place where one feels small before the power of nature, but also fascinated by the ability of man to build something so permanent in such a difficult environment.

Now we invite you to continue your next discovery. Let yourself be carried away by the idea of how kings once ruled here, and how only silent memories and beautiful nature rule here today. Walk the surrounding paths, sense the smell of the forest, and watch the light turn on the rock walls. Any view of Lietava Castle can offer you something new. Thank you for spending time with us and for looking at this historical monument with the eyes of the past. We wish you a pleasant and inspiring rest of your day at these majestic Súľov Hills.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of Lietava Castle are awakening into life. The first light green vegetation and flowering trees create a fresh atmosphere that contrasts with the roughness of the stone ruins. It is recommended to put on layered clothes and put on firm shoes, as the roads may be wet after spring rains. It's best to come early when the air is cleanest. The summer season brings intense sunlight and dense greenery, which slowly surrounds the castle. The atmosphere is full of energy and bright light, which is ideal for observing panoramic views of the Žilina region. In the main summer season, do not forget light, breathable clothing, plenty of drinking water and sun protection. Autumn is a period of dramatic colors when the leaves around the castle turn into golden and red tones. Moths in the valley give the ruins a mysterious and romantic touch. Warm clothing and caution when walking on wet and slippery leaves are suitable. The most beautiful natural lighting for photography can be found during the afternoon. In winter, Lietava Castle is freezing and majestic, especially if the ruins are covered with white snow. Nature will be quiet and the country will get a minimalist, almost mystical look. Thermoregulatory layers and waterproof footwear are essential. For short days, plan a visit until noon to make full use of daylight.
