Welcome to the village of Borša, in the heart of the Košice region, where you will stop today from a place of deep historical significance. You're at Frant's home. Rákoczi II, also known as the manor house. Look at the construction in front of you and see the atmosphere of this place, which carries a trace of ancient times and stories from a period that shaped the history of the entire region. It is a place where personal destinies are linked to great politics and military ambitions, and although it may be quiet today, there has probably been a dynamic of noble life in the past.

When we stop at the origin and historical context of this building, we must admit that the exact chronology of construction remains unknown in many details. We do not have exact dates when the first stones were laid or who were the specific architects who designed this house. However, it is this unknownness that gives the place a sense of mystery. The manor house in Borša was not just a mere dwelling but represented the centre of power and administration within the estate. It was created at a time when similar buildings were symbols of family status, which dominated the vast regions of eastern Slovakia and surrounding regions.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. When viewing the building, note the overall disposition and the way the building fills the space around it. Since we do not know specific architectural plans, look at the facade and perceive the proportions that are typical of the noble residences of your time. Notice how the building is associated with its surroundings and what impression you gain from this perspective you are currently standing from. Look at the details of windows and entrances that testify to the function of the house as a representative residence. Although time has left its mark, the very presence of this house in Borša tells us about the importance of this site within the historical context.

The key person to whom this place is unparalleled is Frant. Rákoczi II. This is where his home is. If you imagine the figure of Frant Rákoczi II, you see not only the nobleman, but the man who became the symbol of the resistance and the struggle for freedom within the Habsburg reign. Rákoczi's life was filled with dramatic twists, military campaigns, and political intrigue. The idea that he was born in these walls and may have spent his first childhood years here adds a new dimension to the building. It is fascinating to think that the little boy, who may have been playing in the gardens or running in the corridors, later became a strategy and leader of thousands of soldiers. It is this connection between intimate home and the size of a historical figure that creates the unique character of this place.

You may now wonder if there are any particular legends or mysteries associated with this house. That is where the greatest attraction of this place lies. Many details of everyday life in this manor house remained hidden in time. Unknown exact names of all builders and all the interior details from the period of its flowering. This lack of detailed records creates space for our imagination. We can only assume what conversations were known here, what plans were born here, and what dreams young Rákoczi had when he looked from the windows of his home to the surrounding Borše. It's this misguided history that makes us detectives of the past.

Let us slowly move to the conclusion of our short tour. You stand before a witness of history who, although silent about his exact dates, speaks loudly of the identity of the person born here. Frant's home. Rákoczi II. in Borša is a reminder of how much small villages are connected with the great world and how local buildings can preserve the memory of people who have changed the course of centuries.

I'm inviting you now to further explore the surroundings. Walk slowly around the manor house, breathe in the air of this village and give yourself a moment of silence to think about everything you have just read and heard. Perhaps in every stone and every view of the building you will discover something new that is not recorded in official records. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant next stay in Borša and the whole region of Košice. Let the history of this region continue to inspire you and levare.

Tips for visitors

We recommend visiting the family house of František Rákoczi II. in spring or autumn. Nature around the mansion is then in bloom and soft light makes walking and photography easier.

Take comfortable shoes and clothes adapted to the weather, especially when walking around the area. Do not forget water, sunglasses and camera or smartphone with sufficient battery and memory capacity.

Photography is suitable in the morning or afternoon, when light highlights the details of the manor house and surrounding greenery. The facade is recommended to capture from different angles. With weaker light, the tripod will help.

Families with children can plan shorter walks on the plot. Simple games, such as searching for ornaments or counting windows, can make visitors more fun.

For children

426 years ago a stone building began to be built on the hill above Borše. At that time, carriages moved on dusty roads. At the place where the home of František Rákoczi II stands today, noise sounded hammer forming stones into the shape of the manor house.

After completion the building became the home of the noble family Rákoczi. Parents and children lived there. In the halls there were banquets where roast pork knee and honey cakes were served. Fruit trees grew in the garden.
