Hlohovecký hrad Manor house with grounds
Hlohovský manor house is located south of the town Hlohovec in Trnava region. The original castle is mentioned in 1113 in the Zobor list. In the 13th century it was the property of various feudal families, especially the Erdődy family, who converted it into a representative manor house in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The area is registered under number ÚZPF 838 and consists of 15 objects, including theatre, park, riding and other historical buildings. The original castle was built probably in the 11th century. In 1275 King Ladislav IV. donated the castle of the Absov family, which owned it with breaks until the 17th century. Since 1720 Erdődys became owners, who gradually converted the castle into a manor house.
The first one was Juraj Leopold Erdődy, who started the rebuilding in the 18th century. His son Ján Nepomuk Erdődy and descendant Jozef Erdődy (1754-1824) reconstructed the manor house and complex during the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Jozef Erdődy was a prominent figure - Nitra countyman, Chancellor of Emperor František II. in Vienna, holder of the Order of Golden Fleece and participant of the Vienna Congress. Thanks to it, the largest platanový háj was created in Central Europe and in 1802, an empire theatre was built, which is today the oldest functioning theatre in Slovakia.
The architecture of the manor house reflects different styles from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. In the 18th century Erdődys rebuilt the castle into a baroque mansion. 19th Century Jozef Erdődy had the manor house adapted in the spirit of classicism and empiric. The area of the manor house consists of 15 objects, including theatre (1802), park (1790-1800), riding (early 19th century), baroque pavilions, menužeries, grotta, greenhouse and waterworks. The park is natural-lander with French terraces and the largest platan grove in Central Europe. New Gothic gate to the area was built in 1893.
The owners of the manor house were Erdődy, who owned it until 1945. During World War II and the years 1945-1951 the manor house was used as a hospital for Soviet soldiers and later as a educational institution for youth. Since 1951 is a mansion in the property of Hlohovec, which seeks its reconstruction. Currently the building is in the emergency condition, but partial reconstruction is planned with the aim of public availability. The establishment of a museum of medieval justice and the return of precious historical objects from the depositaries of the Vlastived Museum in Hlohovec and the Castle Červený Kameň is planned.
