Castle Ostrý Kameň is a ruin at the height of 576 m above sea level. The castle of Ostrý Kameň is located in the national nature reserve Záruby near the village Buková (Trnava district). This 13th century border castle served to protect the western border of Hungary and trade route from Buda to Czech countries, known as the Czech route.

The castle was founded in the 13th century and it has been mentioned in documents since 1273. The name is probably derived from the shape of the rock. It was originally royal property, but in 1366 the king gave it to Nicholas of Seča. At the end of the 14th century, the castle was won by Duke Stibor. Later, the castle was owned by the Kegelevich families, the Thurzo family, the Forgáč family, and since the 15th century by the Counts of Saint George and Pezinok. In the 16th century it belonged to the Czobors, from 1554 to the Bakic and Révai. By the end of the 18th century, the castle was acquired by the Pálffy family, who later moved the estate to Moravian Saint John.

The Gothic castle stands at the end of the mountain ridge, which separates from the rest of the terrain in the rock cut trench. It consisted of a residence palace and a prism tower for observation and defence. The ridge was probably seen in the castles Plavecký Castle, Korlát and Branč. In the middle of the 15th century, the buildings were extended to the northwest. In the 16th century there was an economic front with bakery, living space for staff, farm buildings with basements and chapel. The area was surrounded by high walls with bastions on the corner. There was also a cistern, a kitchen, and a prison in the upper castle. The retained elements include a Renaissance double console, a key gun and a lateral lining.

In 1704 a chicken battle took place around the castle, where the castle was probably damaged. The castle lost strategic importance after moving the Czech road through Bratislava. Frequent litigation between owners has contributed to its breakdown since the 18th century.

The castle is a ruin today. Stone masonry palaces, farm buildings and bastions are partly hidden in the forest.

Tips for visitors

The castle is suitable to visit in May or autumn.

Since it is a castle ruin on a rocky mountain, we recommend solid shoes and plenty of drinking water. Due to the exposed position it is appropriate to carry a jacket.

Photos are worth doing during the golden hour before sunset. Light highlights the texture of stone walls and the view of the Trnava basin.

Families with children can learn about history in the field. We recommend preparing for children a short quiz about castles. Safety should be taken into consideration when walking on uneven terrain.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring - The sun rises above the horizon and illuminates the stone ruins with golden light in the period of blooming meadows and forests around the castle Ostrý Kameň. The air is fresh, it often rains, so we recommend a light wind and waterproof layer. It is advisable to set off early in the morning or late in the afternoon when light is softer and tourist routes less crowded.

Summer - In summer the surrounding forest is dense and green. The intense sun can cause overheating, so you need to wear a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and have plenty of fluid with you. Rest in the shade and walk late in the afternoon will highlight the golden reflection of the stone walls.

Autumn - When leaves turn color into orange, red, and yellow, the landscape looks different. Colder mornings and more frequent cold sores create foggy sceneries that highlight the silhouette of the castle. Layered warm clothing, waterproof footwear and scarf to protect against wind are recommended. A good time is an early afternoon when the sun's rays pass through the colorful treetops.

Winter - In winter, the castle is sharp snowy stone, the trees are leafless and the air is freezing. The low position of the sun causes long shadows, so it is advisable to visit the castle around noon when light is most intense. A warm coat, cap, gloves and solid anti-slip shoes are recommended for snowy and slippery trails.
