Welcome to Blatnica. You have just put on your headphones and are standing in front of an old stone granary, which silently and dignifiedly testifies to the lost times of this picturesque village in Žilina region. When you are in front of it, a robust and impressive structure grows before your eyes. Look in front of you at its stone facade and see the atmosphere that this historical monument radiates. Although the exact origin of this object remains shrouded by the unknown, and the chronology of its building is not supported in writing, the very sight of the worked stone and solid walls in you immediately arouse respect for the fortium of old masters. We don't know exactly what year it's been in her birth certificate, nor do we know the names of architects or historical personalities directly associated with this place. However, the granite does not need sound names to speak to us. Its value lies in authenticity, silent testimony to how it has been managed in the past, how crops have been protected, and how what generations should have been built.

Let's move closer to the building itself and pay attention to the details you have at your sight. The granite is made of solid stone that resisted not only the tooth of time but also changing epochs. As you look at its walls, note the way the stones are laid and joined together. There is nothing spectacular, no unnecessary ornaments, because this building had primarily a practical purpose. It was designed to protect grain and food from moisture, pests, or fire. It is this pure purpose that gives the granary its distinctive character. Look up on the roof and the line of perimeter walls that still define its space. Imagine, in the past, wagons full of grain were brought here, as they worked here, the noise that prevailed in the surrounding area when the harvest was stored in a safe place to survive the coming winter.

Instead of major historical battles or power intrigues, as we might expect in other monuments, this space breathes the peace of the ordinary but extremely important life of our ancestors. Although chronicles have not recorded specific stories of famous nobles associated with this granary, the most powerful story is the very existence of this building. It's the story of the village, work, sweat and perseverance. The granaries were one of the centers of economic life of every larger settlement, and this mudhouse was undoubtedly witnessed by many generations of locals passing by on their way to the fields or returning home.

Mystery hounded history and unknown exact origin of this stone building give the whole place a special charm. When you stand in front of its walls, you can engage your imagination and think about what all these stones have experienced, what conversations have taken place here, when the management in the village has been regulated, and what secrets lie behind the foundations laid in the unknown century by the hands of unknown builders. It is this silence and lack of written sources that give space to our own imagination, so that we can revive the past much more intensely than if we read hard data from textbooks.

We believe that the walk through this part of Blatnice and the meeting with this remarkable stone granary enriched your day with a new experience and brought you a piece of authentic history of Žilina region. Let yourself feel the calm atmosphere of this place for a while, walk around and discover other corners that Blatnica offers. Thank you for listening to our guide, we wish you a pleasant rest of the day and goodbye to other discoveries.

Tips for visitors

The monument of the stone granary in Blatnica is the most suitable tin visit during the early morning, when morning light illuminates the historical facade and surrounding scenery of the Turčianska kotlina basin. Be sure to take comfortable tight shoes with you and remember to have enough drinking water.

For photographers, this place offers great compositional possibilities from the western side, where the massive stone structure of the granary stands out in contrast with nature. We recommend to combine the visit with discovering the traditional architecture of the entire village Blatnica.
