Likava Castle Castle
Likavský castle is a ruin located in the village Likavka, district Ružomberok. This is the largest castle in Liptov whose task was to guard the road from Považia to Orava and Poland.
The first written record of the castle dates back to 1315 when Charles Robert donated it to the countyman Dončov. Between 1431 and 1434 the castle was occupied by the Hussite crew. Among the later owners of the building were Ján Hunyadi, Peter Komorovský, genus Zápoľskov, Pekryovci, Ján Krušič, Ileshazi and Tököli. After the rebellion I was suppressed. Tököli was taken by the castle under the administration of the Era. In 1447 it became a table castle and the center of the royal castle estate Likava, which included Ružomberok, Nemecká Ľupča (today Partizánska Ľupču), Liptovský Trnovec, Liptovská Sielnica, Bobrovec and 17 other villages.
The construction development of the castle went through different styles. The lower castle was added to the original core after 1435. In the second half of the 15th century, the Gothic upper castle was established, and the Gothic tower was built as well as a cistern from the middle of the 14th century. After 1533, adjustments were made in Renaissance style. Between 1642 and 1700 there were extensive construction works, during which new fortifications with five bastions were built. The whole area records 28 objects including Renaissance courtyards, gates, walls, bastion and palace. The elements of the Baroque appear, for example, at the gate of the castle in front of the II.
The fate of the castle was influenced by military conflicts. In 1670 it was severely damaged by the imperial army. Later he served as a military hostel and since 1685 as a table prison. In 1703 the castle was captured by the rebel forces František II. Rákoci. In 1707 the castle was demolished at the command of Rákoci in retreat from the imperial armies.
The castle is currently managed by the Liptov Museum. In Hunyady's bastion there is established a permanent exhibition of the history of the castle, which allows you to know its historical development and strategic role in the region.
