M.R. Stefánik's Mohyl Memorial with grounds
The memorial of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik from 1923 is located in the cadastral territory of the village Most near Bratislava. It stands at the site of the air crash where M. R. Štefánik died with Italian crew.
The accident occurred on May 4, 1919 on the flight from Italian Trieste to Slovakia. The Czechoslovak minister and General Dr. Milan R. Štefánik perished and his escort: Italian lieutenant I. Mancinelli-Scotti, Sergeant H. Merlino and shooter G. Agginuti. In 1921/22 General J. Sneydarek had a memorial stone built on the site of the fall with the names of all the victims.
The present pyramid-shaped monument was designed by architect Dušan Jurkovič in 1923. The building of the rest of the earth wall and the perimeter of the area form linters. Reconstructions took place in 1988 and 1992. At the object there is a stone tablet with the date of the accident, the names perished and the inscription For eternal memory. The Monument Office of the Slovak Republic records the area under the number ÚZPF 2080; it consists of a memorial (2080/1), plantation (2080/2) and a two-row hall (2080/3).
Since 1922 the first red marked tourist route led to the crash site. It was built by the Bratislava Department of the Club of Czech-Slovak Tourists from Ivanka Train Station near the Danube. The route continued later as the path of General M. R. Štefánik through the ridge of the Little Carpathians to Bradlo.
The monument lies on the Danube island, about 100 metres from the border of Bratislava and the former village of Farná. Access to the area is possible by car from the village Ivanka near the Danube to the local parking lot. From the monument it leads along the green hiking route Štefánik's Magistral on the crossroads of the White Cross, where it joins the red marked SNP Heroes Road heading towards the Mohyla on Bradle. On the outskirts of Ivanka near the Danube there is a branch to the Memorial Room gen. M. R. Stefanik.

Welcome to the village Most near Bratislava. Milan Rastislav Štefánik is standing before you. It is a monumental building that serves as a memorial and tomb of a significant diplomat, astronomer and general.
The history of this place begins with a tragic event. Milan Rastislav Štefánik died here on May 4, 1919, along with the Italian crew in a plane crash. The death of this personality deeply affected the society then and there was a need to create a place of memory. The first step was to build a small monument in 1921 and 1922. It was a memorial stone planted by General J. Sheydarek, on which the names of all who died in this tragedy were engraved. This modest stone was just a foretaste of a much larger building.
The architecture itself was founded in 1923. The building takes the form of a pyramid, which is not accidental, because this shape symbolizes eternity and immortality. The authors of the proposal were well-known architect Dušan Jurkovič and other co-workers who put a sense of proportion and harmony into the building.
When you see the monument as a whole, note the details surrounding the pyramid itself. The building enriches the earth's wall, which gives it a sense of stability and separation from the surrounding terrain. The edge of the area is made of lime, which creates a natural green frame and adds a peaceful, almost sacral character to the place. At the building there is also a stone terrace, which complements the overall composition of the area.
What you see today is the result of a long process of care. Although the basic form of 1923 was preserved, the memorial underwent reconstructions in 1988 and then in 1992. These repairs were necessary to preserve the integrity of the building and to serve future generations as a place of reflection and respect.
Milan Rastislav Štefánik is the key person to which this place is connected. His life was the story of a man who moved in the high diplomatic circles of Europe, devoted himself to science and fought for the emergence of a separate Czechoslovak state. The May 1919 tragedy, which took place here, ended his life in the bloom of strength and activity. Therefore, this monument is an important symbol of gratitude for everything Stefanik has done for us.
The choice of the shape of the pyramid by Dušan Jurkovič in 1923 was a bold and original step at that time. Pyramids in our parts are not a common element of architecture, but in this case they express the transcendence and timelessness that the architect wanted to evoke. When you face this monument, you see the contrast between the strict geometry of the building and the natural beauty surrounding the lip and the green wall. It is a place where human creation meets nature and history connects with the present.
We are slowly completing our short tour. M. R. Štefánik's mohyla is a place that requires silence and respect. We recommend that you now go around the entire area in peace, walk around the perimeter of the lime trees, and look at the form of the pyramid from different angles. Consider the clues that people whose names are associated with this place have left in history.
Thank you for your attention and for visiting this place with us. We wish you the rest of the day and a pleasant sequel to discovering the history of our country. We say goodbye to you and invite you to further explore the surroundings.
