Welcome to the heart of Bratislava, right in the historical Old Town. Right now you are facing an interesting city apartment building, which is a witness to the variables of generations. Let me guide you to this place and bring you closer to its atmosphere and character. Look ahead to this city building. Although the exact date of its creation and the names of the original authors remain shrouded in mystery, this house has its fixed place in the urban tissue of our capital. Feel his facade and the total radiation that bears the imprint of old times. At the time when such rental houses were created, Bratislava was known earlier as Prešporok, a busy center of multicultural life, where Slovak, German and Hungarian influences intersected. The building served as an apartment building, a place where under one roof lived residents of various social classes, from tenants of more modest apartments to wealthier townspeople. Let's move on to the very architecture of this object and to the details you can see right in front of you. Look up on the front of the building, on its lines, windows and facade division. Even if we do not know the exact architect, the hand of the builders left a clear manuscript of their time on the house. Note the proportions of each floor and the way the house fits into the street buildings. Urban rental houses of this type were designed to make efficient use of the urban area while providing a representative look into the street. The windows that lined the facade once lit rooms, lounges and kitchens of the then inhabitants. Imagine the noise that prevailed here many decades ago, when the same streets heard the knock of horse-cars and the voices of marketers. Nyni pay attention to the stories that bind to such old houses. Although the specific names of celebrities that would have lived their lives in this house have not been preserved in chronicles, the stories of ordinary people are equally fascinating. Behind every window you see, human destinies once took place. There were family dinners, celebrations, quiet candlelight evenings, but also everyday worries. These apartment buildings formed the character of the Old Town and created houses for thousands of Bratislavaians. Every tenant who walked through this gate left an invisible mark in the space. Try to stop for a moment and listen to the rush of the street. Perhaps at this very moment, you are following in the footsteps of someone who entered home with the same door after a long day at work many centuries ago. It is fascinating that although the exact chronology of construction and the names of the builders remain hidden in archival empty places, the building itself speaks for itself. He's a silent witness to history who doesn't need fancy inscriptions to get the attention of a receptive visitor. The most beautiful thing about wealthy and poorer neighborhoods is that they keep their secrets. This anonymity of the past gives space to our fantasy to imagine the life it used to be. Now that you've met this house, I want to invite you to discover the Old Town again. Take a walk in the alleys surrounding it, see the smells of cafes, the beauty of neighbouring historical buildings and the unique atmosphere that Bratislava offers at every turn. Thank you for giving your time to this stop, and I wish you the wonderful rest of the day full of discoveries. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

It is a good time to visit the Old Town in Bratislava early in the morning during working days when the streets are quieter and without crowds of tourists. You can see the architecture of historical rental houses. We recommend taking comfortable shoes on historical tiles, a charged camera and a bottle of water, especially in the summer months. Morning sunlight better illuminates facades, portals and windows of buildings. In the vicinity there are historic streets and squares. Families with children should choose a sports stroller instead of deep due to uneven pavement.

For children

Imagine being in a time machine. You close your eyes, press the button, and you'll find yourself in nineteen hundred and twenty-two. It is incredible and exactly one hundred and four years from the moment when the great story of one special house began to be written in the historical heart of Bratislava. The old world smells all over the street, people are still walking in hats, and right now, a new, modern home giant is growing up on the corner of the streets.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings to the streets of the Old Town waking town, when facade of rental houses and historical architectural details stand out in daylight. The surrounding greenery in nearby plots and on the waterfront creates a visual contrast to the stone structure. During this period you will not meet mass tours, so you will see the exteriors of the sights in peace. The practical advice is to dress with a layer, because spring weather tends to be variable and cold winds from the Danube can surprise you. For a walk it is ideal morning when the streets are quietest.

Summer envelops the urban environment into warm tones and long sunny days provide natural lighting, although the narrow streets of the historical centre absorb heat and create a city's thermal island. Nature in the surroundings is abundant, walks make the shades of trees pleasant in nearby gardens. During the summer season the concentration of visitors increases, so it is recommended to head out early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun fades. Choose lightweight clothes from natural materials, comfortable shoes for historical tiles, and remember to drink and cover your head.

Autumn changes the character of the site thanks to soft light and falling leaves, which complements the city exteriors. Natural scenery around the revelry in shades of brown, yellow and red. The crowds of tourists fall apart after the summer, which allows the perception of the details of facades. During this period you will appreciate warmer clothes such as coat and scarf, because the dry weather and the earlier darkening come quickly. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the low sun creates shadows and depths of space.

Winter provides the historical centre with a chamber and quiet atmosphere, which is sometimes underlined by morning fog or dust of snow on the roofs and ledges of houses. The dark comes early, the quarter will cover the evening street lighting, which highlights the character of cities. During the fuzzy days and during the December holidays, you will meet fewer people here unless we count the main pedestrian moves. High quality winter clothes, solid footwear with non-slip soles and warm accessories are essential because the coldness of stone and pavement is intense. The ideal time for outdoor walks is around noon, when temperatures reach the daily maximum.
