parish church of St. Peter and Paul Church
The parish church of Saint Peter and Paul is located in the city district Barca in Košice. Its history can be dating back to the middle of the 13th century, when it was at the place of the original Romanesque church in the 12th century. This primary church served the inhabitants of Central and Vyšna Barca.
In the 15th century, the church was transformed into a Gothic style with a polygonally closed presbytery and a star vault, similar to St. Elizabeth's Cathedral.
In the 18th century, the church was in bad condition and closed. In 1712 Juraj Gomáromy and Katarína donated a simple side altar to the Virgin Mary. During the summer of 1757 the church was added new parts, including a tower with concrete foundations, and was sanctified by Saint Peter and Paul.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the church was expanded and renewed by several reconstructions. In 1901 southern ships with wall walls and red tile were added. Between the years 1930-1933 were added to Vincent Kačmar's design transverse ships, thus moving the main sanctuary to the north side.
The latest modifications included reconstruction in 1951 and other interior and exterior adjustments between 1962-1984, including replacement of windows and plasters.
Today the church is manifested by a combination of different styles - from Romance to Gothic and Baroque. Its exterior includes an older shrine, a newer part to the north and a side chapel with a star arch. The interior includes Gothic windows, a paperstic arch of the Presbytery and a cluster concrete ceiling of the ship.
The church of Saints Peter and Paul is an architectural monument in Košice Barca. His presence brings an opportunity to mark the historical and cultural heritage of Slovakia.

Welcome to the city district of Barca, one of the historical corners of Košice, where time seems a little slower and each stone wall has its own story. You stand right in front of the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul. Let yourself be carried away by this place for a while, and feel the atmosphere that works here. It is a place where the daily life of today's suburbary part meets with deep traces of the ancient past. Looking at this building, you may feel that it is just another sacral building in the country, but it is, in fact, a silent witness of the century that is taking place here and following the changes that have gone through this area.
Understand that what you see in front of you is not the result of one moment, but of a long process of constant adaptation and changing world. Although the exact names of builders, architects, or prominent personalities attached to this place have been lost in the darkness of history and have remained unknown, the very essence of this church tells us more about its origin than we might have thought at first sight. When we try to penetrate its depth, we find that its history is extremely long. Its roots date back to the 12th century, when the Romanesque church already existed. This means that this location was an important spiritual center for the community in Barca long before our present world became as we know it.
In the mid - 13th century, however, the building began to develop in a new direction, and that is when its character began to form into a form that we are starting to recognize today. It is fascinating to think about how people's needs, artistic tastes and technical possibilities have changed over the centuries, and how these changes were reflected in the shapes and lines of this church.
I will now tell you what you should particularly notice when looking at the architecture of this memorable building. View this building as a layered object where various epochs meet. The most significant breakthrough occurred in the 15th century. At that time the church was transformed into a gothic style, which means in architecture the transition to new, bolder and more elegant forms. If you now look towards the eastern part of the building, you can notice what is so typical of Gothic - a polygonally closed presbytery. This geometric precision, this çocostal shape closing the holy space, gives the construction its specific character and depth. Note this harmony between the massiveness of the older parts and the new Gothic elegance that was brought here several centuries ago. It's just this contrast, this interplay of style that makes this church such a unique object.
Although the unknown architect did not give us his name, we see his work clearly at every angle and line of this presbytery. It is the visual signature of someone who understood geometry in the 15th century and wanted to create a space that would be majestic. Although we do not know the specific stories of the individuals who lived here, you can imagine thousands of people who sought comfort in this area, celebrated vital moments of life, and met here in times of uncertainty. The church of Saint Peter and Paul was the heart of their community.
But there is also a mystery that hangs in silence in this place. It's the unknown. Unknown names of builders, unknown exact chronology of all changes, we do not know the faces of the people who have prayed here in centuries. However, this uncertainty may not be a shortcoming, but rather a challenge to your imagination. It is this unknownness that gives the site a certain mystic. The church stands here as a quiet, anonymous timekeeper who doesn't need big names to prove his importance. His presence in Barca is proof of the continuity that persists despite changes in governments, states and technology.
Now, when you look at the facade and the overall silhouette of the church, try not to see only bricks and stone. Try to perceive the invisible energy that has remained here for hundreds of years. Consider the transition from the Romanesque stability that was here in the twentieth century to the Gothic prominence that came later. It's like a conversation between two different time periods that takes place right in front of your eyes.
Understand that each of these changes, every change of style, was the answer to the dynamics of the world. When they chose Gothic in the 15th century, it was not just aesthetic, but a little more, a new way of expressing the spiritual world through architecture. And today, when you look at it, you're part of this endless chain of observers.
Do not forget that this church is not only a static object but a living witness to the history of Košice and its surroundings. It is part of the identity of this part of the city, Barca, which has preserved its own atmosphere thanks to these historical tracks.
Now I won't hold you long in this deep dive. I invite you to continue your next discovery. You may decide to circle around the church to see how it changes its appearance depending on the angle at which you view it. Perhaps you will stop at details that you have far from noticed, or you will just stop for a moment and be surrounded by the peace this place offers. Every step around this memorable structure can reveal another small detail that will help you to better understand its beauty.
Thank you for sharing this moment in time with me and for paying attention to the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul. I wish you a pleasant journey and let this place bring you at least a small part of the peace and fascination that people have felt in it for centuries. Goodbye.
