st. Michael's parish church Church

The parish church of St Michael the Archangel is a Roman Catholic church in the center of the village Modrová in Trenčín region. The building comes from the 12th century. At its age, the elements of Roman architecture and the Latin inscription testify.

The formation of the church is related to immigrants from Italy, so called Romans, who built the tower and other parts of the building. Pathocinium can reach the Great Moravian era or between the 10th and 13th centuries. The Latin inscription on the tower front indicates that it was built on November 18, 1157.

The church is oriented on the east-west axis. The Presbytery stands on square foundations and is encircled by a walled vault. The northern side of the sanctuary with a small sacristy is connected by a flat gothic portal of woodpecker type. Sakristia has one Romance and one Gothic slim window 10 to 15 centimeters wide. On the southern wall there is a window closed half-circle and on the east wall there is a brick Gothic window. Triumphal arc is encircled by a semicircle with a simple profile.

The church ship was spread by blind arcades in the north and south walls. Originally, the ceiling was arched and decorated with paintings, but after the last treatment it is flat. In the western part of the ship is a wooden empora. At the end of the 17th and early 18th centuries, a square chapel was added to the southern rear arcade. The tower bears signs of early-baroque rebuilding, which is visible on the onion roof and raised under-roof ledge.

The monument was a stone osario that stood behind the church until 1928. Romanesque stone baptistery is now located in the district museum. The area is registered by the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under number ÚZPF 1253.

The church combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements and preserves the traces of Italian builders from the 12th century.
