Urban hospital Hospital and church
The city hospital in Bratislava's Old Town is located on Špitálská Street and is part of the church of St. Ladislav, a classicistic monument building. The church, dedicated to Hungarian King Ladislav I, was built in the 19th century and is part of a four - winged city hospital.
The history of the site begins in 1309 when the archers of the Antonites founded the first building that existed until the end of the 14th century. After its decline, new buildings with a chapel dedicated to St. Ladislav were built in 1397. The complex was devastated by geese in 1428 and repaired after their departure. In 1529, in preparation for the defense of the Turks, buildings were destroyed by the Bratislavaans. After this incident, the new hospital was built in 1543.
Today's church building was built according to the project Ignác Feigler st., which began in 1830 with the participation of Hungarian ruler Ferdinand V. and Esztergom archbishop, Cardinal Alexander Rudnay. The church tower was built in 1831.
Architecturally it is a one-ship church with a dome on oval floor plan and radial chapels. The facade of the hospital is developed wide, broken through the facade of the church with a bell tower. In 1891 František Storno restored the church and designed colored windows made by A. Vermes in Soporno. The interior was filled with figurative wall paintings by F. Grünwind in 1927 after the original white colour.
In the church there are works of artists such as Ferdinand Lüttgendorf and paintings on side altars. A copy of the Lourdes Cave created by Alojz Rigel is located on the right side of the entrance to the temple ship.
The city hospital and the church of St Ladislav are part of the monument area registered under the number of the ÚZPF 266. This area is an important part of the cultural heritage of Bratislava.

Welcome to Špitálska Street in Bratislava-Old Town, where the city hospital and church of St.Ladislav stand. This complex has been in history since 1309 when the architects of the Antonites founded the first building in this place as a shelter for the poor and sick population. The first building existed until the end of the 14th century, when it was replaced by a new one, which gradually evolved into today's church.
Architecturally, the place is fascinating with its classicistic elements such as elegant portal and stucco decorations on the facade. These elements testify to the artistic skillful approach of the age of classicism.
Although specific architects are not known, it is clear that these buildings were created by a group of talented builders and artists. The archers of the Antonites and many unknown benefactors played a vital role in their construction.
Gradually, the function of the hospital evolved from a refuge for the poor to a complex serving different needs of the village. Although specific stories about individual personalities are unknown, it is possible to imagine the lives of these people in this building.
On the area of the hospital you can feel the atmosphere of the past and the feeling of history. This local complex is likely to encourage further proscouraging of the Old Town and its historical monuments.
Thank you for your attention. I hope you liked this information and inspired the further discovery of Bratislava-Old Town. If you have time, I recommend visiting the surrounding monuments full of fascinating stories. Goodbye!
