Ursulin Monastery in Bratislava-Star The town is a cultural monument. This late Baroque building together with the church of the Loretanes Virgin Mary form a historical zone. The monastery and church are included in the list of national cultural monuments of the Slovak Republic.

The monarch of Ursula sisters was founded in Italy in 1535, on the advent of Angela Merici. Their mission was to educate girls and women, which spread across Europe. In the second half of the 17th century, Ursulin sisters settled in Bratislava. On May 10, 1676, they were allowed to expand their activities throughout the country on the basis of the document of Archbishop Juraj Selepčéni of Esztergom.

Today's church was built between 1659 and 1663 as a renaissance building of Protestants. The building near the northern walls of the city was acquired by Ursulín sisters after 1670 and in 1672 it was dedicated to Loretanská Pannie Maria. The monastery following the church was established between 1677 and 1688.

The church architecture is originally renaissance with Baroque accessories. The main façade is oriented into the street and ends with a wooden prism tower with a bell tower. After the fire in 1683 the new roof was covered with copper sheet metal with onion shape. In the interior there is a late Baroque main altar from the last quarter of the 18th century with the statue of the Black Virgin Mary, which was donated in 1684 by Archbishop Leopold Kolonič.

The church has side altars of St. Anna and St. Augustine with a pillar wooden architecture and a shield extension. The paintings in the retables of these altars were painted by Martin Speer in 1739, by Peter Brandenthal.

The pulpit is late - baroque, with the rhetoric and statues of Moses and Aaron. In 2006, on the 10th anniversary of the visit to Bratislava by Ján Paul II, a bronze relief of the pope was uncovered from the work of sculptor Ján Bork.

Welcome to the historical heart of Bratislava, Old Town, where you have a unique monument - Ursulín Monastery. This miracle of architecture and spiritual tradition is probably waiting for you to dive into it. This monastery is part of the historical complex along with the famous church of the Loretanes Virgin Mary. As a first step on the way of discovery, look up and enjoy the harmony of fun and architecture that tell you about the rich past this place. Ursulinian monastery has its roots in Italy, namely in 1535. Its foundation is associated with Angela Merici, a woman who has decided to revive the mission of education and mental support for girls. This monastery was the first home of the Ursula sisters in Italy, which marked the beginning of a long and fruitful period of their work throughout Europe. On May 10, 1676, the monastery was allowed to extend its activities to our country, namely the Archbishops of Esztergom, Juiy Selepčéni. This act was not just an administrative step; it was a symbolic closure of the link between Italy and Slovakia in an area of public good. Now that you are already a little informed about the origin and historical context, take a closer look at the architectural details. The monastery's facade is more overlooked, but in it you can find elements of baroque architecture that were typical for this period. Note also the church of the Loretanes Virgin Mary, its fun and interior are full of historical nuances. Outside the architecture there are many interesting stories connected with each other. These women did not only work within the convent; their services were wider, often devoted to education and health. Their presence in Bratislava was extremely important for the city, as they provided education and support not only to girls but also to the wider community. The interesting thing is that although the specific architects of the monastery are unknown to us, their dealership stands as a witness about the abilities and talents of the builders from that period. This fact adds a certain missterious prime to the entire complex. Finally, let's look at the key figures associated with this place. Except Angela Merici and Archbishop George There were also many other women who, by their modest practices, changed the community around. As the end of our short journey, I invite you to dig deeper into the historical and spiritual aspects of this place. If you have the opportunity, visit the Church of the Loretanes Virgin Mary and see how the monastery and church together form harmonious unity. Thank you for your interest in the Ursulin Monastery. As a true treasure of Bratislava's Old Town, this place still has many things to tell you. Be with us again and discover the other secrets of this historic zone.
