The oldest parts come from the second half of the 13th century and are built in Gothic style. From this time come the five - side bassions and Rondels, which replaced the older Gothic towers. Among the preserved elements are the five-side basthion from the year 1577 and the rondel courtyard from the second half of the 15th century. From the 16th century also preserved walls with basthions and trench walls.

I welcome you to the heart of Košice, the historical centre of the city, where time has slowed down and history speaks to us through every stone. Right now you are standing in front of one of the city's most important monuments, the city walls. When you look at them, you will see the massive stone structures that once defined the boundary between safe urban life and the unknown world outside. Feel this atmosphere of stability and protection, which these walls will continue after many years. It is a place where the architecture of defense meets the spirit of the old town, and you now have the opportunity to feel this size right in front of you. Although the exact dates of creation and the names of the specific architects who designed these walls remained unknown in time, their meaning is undeniable. The city walls were created not only as an aesthetic complement, but above all as a necessary necessity. At a time when cities were vulnerable to attacks and national conflicts, such fortification represented a unique guarantee of survival. Castles should protect the inhabitants, their property and business routes, which were of key importance to Košice. Imagine how the noise of trading and the silence of the patrols that followed the horizon from the heights once shattered in these streets to warn of the imminent danger. Now take a closer look at what you see. The city walls are not just a simple direct wall but a complex system of defence elements. Note that the area consists of several wall walls that form the base line of protection. However, if you look more carefully, you will also see bassions and bastions. These protruding parts of the walls were of strategic importance because they allowed the defenders to better control the wall and eliminate blind zones where the enemy could hide. Follow the lines of these structures and think about what discipline and precision builders had to develop to create a massive and functional whole. In addition to the walls and bastions themselves, gates are an important part of the fortification system. The gates were the key points of control. Through them he raced throughout the city's life, enter through them traders from far away, messengers with important news and travelers. The gates were not just entrances, but symbols of urban power and autonomy. When you face this area today, you see it as part of a historic centre that is protected as a whole. This means that everything that surrounds you is in close connection with these walls and together they create the unique fabric of the Old Town of Košice. Although history does not mention the names of personalities directly connected with the construction of these walls, we can imagine thousands of nameless people who worked here. From the stonesmiths who carved every block to the soldiers who spent long hours in the pond. Each of them brought his story, his fears, and his hope to this place. The castles are thus a center of collective memory of the city, witnessing the take-offs and falls that Košice has experienced over the centuries. It is fascinating to think of how many generations of Košices have passed through these gates and how many secrets have been hidden in the shadows of these walls. You may be impressed by a mystery that accompanies many similar fortifications. Although we now see walls as static monuments, in the past they were dynamic structures that were constantly modified and supplemented according to new military technologies. It is interesting to think about which parts of the walls are the oldest and which were added later to match the new challenges of the time. It is this unknownness of precise chronology that gives the place a certain charm and makes us more involved in our own imagination. What happened in these bastions during the defensive or celebrations? Who stood on the walls watching the sun rise over the basin? The city walls in Košice are today a national cultural monument and their preservation is important for understanding the identity of the whole region. They are silent witnesses of the past, reminding us that security and stability have been a luxury in history that had to be fought for. Now that you look around, you see this area not only as a set of stone walls, but as a star of the historical centre that links the past with the present. Let's go and finish this part of our tour slowly. I hope you have found a moment to quietly feel the strength of this fortification. Now I invite you to move on and continue to explore the beauty of the Old Town. Be guided by alleys that will lead you to other gems of Košice architecture and history. Note the details, perceive the atmosphere, and enjoy the discovery of this magnificent city. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant continuation journey around Košice.
