The manor house in Želiezovce is a four-wing baroque-classicist building with a central courtyard from the first half of the 18th century, protected as a national cultural monument. It is located in the village Želiezovce and surrounded by a park that bears the name of the music composer Franz Schubert. The area is registered in the Monument Register and consists of three objects: the manor house itself, a stand-alone classicistic pavilion and an adjacent park.

The manor house was built in 1720 by the Esterhazi family in the Baroque style. Between 1794 and 1804 the object underwent a classicistic reconstruction. During World War II he served as the dwelling of Countess Ernestine Coudenh, the last resident of the building until 1944. After the war, the object went into ownership of the city and in the following years served for various purposes, for some time as a kindergarten. After 1989 the building remained unused.

Architectural solution consists of a four-wing layout with central courtyard. The main facade has a central three-axis rizalit with a stone portal decorated with classicistic festons. There's a column portico with a timpanone in front of the portal. External facades break down the crescents and lizen frames. In the windows of the building were preserved original forged bars with aesthetic rods. Interiors have flat ceilings and there are original faucets.

In 1818 and 1824 at the invitation of Ján Karol Esterhazi, Austrian music composer Franz Schubert lived here. Franz and Eduard Sacher lived in the building. Other visitors and residents were Bishop August Fischer Colbrie, Antal Kherndl and Archduke Jozef Ferdinand Habsburg in 1905.

Currently, new applications are being sought for an uninhabited and unused object. In 2009 there were plans to establish the Lower Hron Museum, but the premises do not serve the public for permanent cultural purposes.

The interior of the manor house is currently closed to the public, but Schubert Park is accessible.

Welcome to Želiezovce. Right now, you are standing in front of a beautiful Eszterházy manor house, and with the tones of this audio device you will find yourself in a place that breathes through old times. Sliding away from the hustle of today, you can immerse yourself fully in the atmosphere that this seat has created for centuries. Take a deep breath and let yourself be brought into the story that has taken place here generations before us.

When you look in front of you, a monumental building emerges in front of your eyes, whose walls remember events going back to the first third of the eighteenth century. Let's first look at the very origins of this place. The castle itself was built in 1720 by the influential Esterhazi family. In those days, exactly in the spirit of the times, the building was given its original Baroque form. Imagine the Baroque masters and craftsmen who came here to breathe the life of this settlement. The original baroque dress, however, did not last forever. The time went on and with it changed the architectural tastes and needs of owners.

Instead of just passing by, let's explore the building development that formed the manor house. Between 1794 and 1804 the object underwent a significant classical reconstruction. The architects and builders then reworked the face of the building to match the new, more sober and noble classicistic style. Come into this transformation and see how the baroque lines intersect with classicistic elegance. Not only did the outward appearance change, but the whole building gradually gained a characteristic character that we admire to this day. Look carefully at the facade before you and see its balanced proportions.

Now let us move in time and look at the fates of the people who walked through this building. This place served not only as the seat of the nobility, but also as a living center of culture and art. In 1818 and 1824 the famous Austrian composer Franz Schubert lived here at the invitation of John Charles Esterhazi. Try for a moment to imagine the silence that existed at the time, interrupted only by the sound of the piano and the noise of the surrounding nature. Schubert worked here as a music teacher for the daughters of the Count's family and it was this environment that inspired him to do several works. When you stand here, realize that you are walking in places where the musical genius of the European format has walked.

However, the stories connected with this manor house do not end with classical music. Franz and Eduard Sachers also lived in the building over the years. The name Sacher immediately brings in us the connection with culinary art and famous cake, and the very presence of this family gives the place another, extremely interesting dimension. Imagine the bustle of the then kitchens and salons, where significant personalities of the then society met. The manor house was not just a cold monument to the Esterhazi family, but a vibrant home for artists, aristocrats, and people whose names are known throughout the world.

Sometimes when faced with such a historical monument, one wonders what all the old walls have experienced. In the silence of the premises, the tones of Schubert's songs and the conversations of that time were still ringing. The manor house has survived centuries of political change, social upheavals, and the rotation of owners, yet it stands here telling its story to anyone who is willing to listen to it.

Stop for a while, look around and enjoy the present moment in this historic place. Thank you for spending your time getting to know the history of Želiezovce. I believe you enjoyed our walk today and that you will take home unforgettable experiences. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and goodbye to other wanderings of history.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings the gradual awakening of nature to the Eszterházy mansion in Želiezovce, as a view of the bubbling trees and fresh green grass in the historical park comes to pass. Soft spring sunlight creates ideal conditions for peaceful walks without large crowds of tourists, while the atmosphere breathes fresh and peaceful. During this period, it is recommended to wear layered clothing and tight shoes, as the park's terrain may be wet and muddy after spring rains. The best time to visit is morning, when the park revives with birds singing and morning light is ideal for photographing the architecture of the manor house.

The summer season transforms the surroundings into a lush oasis full of shade, which is provided by centuries old trees in an adjacent park, while sunlight penetrating through treetops creates an interesting game of shadows on historical walls. During the main holiday months you can meet more visitors here, so it is wise to plan your arrival right at the morning to avoid the noon heat. Choose light clothing for the tour, do not forget the cover of your head, sunglasses and a sufficient supply of fluids, as warm weather attracts you to a longer outdoor seating and enjoying the summer atmosphere.

Autumn hides the area of the manor house in warm shades of yellow, orange and red color, which together with the morning fog gives the whole place a melancholy and romantic character. Lighting is more subdued in this period and the sun is setting earlier, so it is ideal to go on a tour right after lunch to catch daylight. Since the weather is changing and the cold wind blows, the practical choices are waterproof jacket, scarf, and comfortable shoes. The crowds are minimal in this period, which is particularly appreciated by lovers of silence, photography and peaceful discovering of history without disturbing influences.

Winter months offer a completely different experience, especially if the park and the roof of the manor house covers a layer of snow that creates a quiet, almost fabulous scenery with a minimum number of visitors. The atmosphere is very chambery, but it is necessary to think about the shortened day time and colder weather, which makes warm winter clothes, hats, gloves and warm footwear with non-slip soles necessary. The best time to visit is around noon, when the outdoor temperature is the highest and weak winter sun at least for a moment illuminates the historical facades.
