fortification Hillfort
Bojná is a complex of early-centred archaeological sites in the Nitra region, which includes a system of castles, burial sites and housing estates. This agglomeration worked from about the 7th to the 10th century.
Location of the sites in the southern part of the Považský Inovec mountain range allowed control of the strategic communication route. The road led through the valley of the Bojnianka stream and through the pass of the Stone Gate, linking the valley of Nitra with the river Váh and Moravia within the regional trade network.
The development of the agglomeration took place in three stages. Early Slovak phase from the 7th and 8th centuries is associated mainly with the castle Bojná III - Žihľajník. The Great Moravian phase in the 9th century brought the transfer of the settlement centre to the localities Bojná I and Bojná II. The closing phase in the first half of the 10th century ends with the demise of the centre, which is related to political changes following the demise of Great Moravia and the formation of the Hungarian state.
Combat Castle I - Valy occupies a plateau with a length of approximately 600 m and a width of about 200 m. The area with an area of approximately 10 ha surrounded the rampart with a total length of 1 340 m. The fortification was built by chamber technique of wood, land and stone. In the most vulnerable places, the cheeks made dry masonry. Vales in some sections were 7 m wide at the foot and maintained height of more than 4 m. The eastern and western gates led to the castle in the form of narrow corridors.
The defence system added additional elements. On the northeast side was dug trough trench deep approximately 2 m. The eastern direction was protected by auxiliary external walls with ditches. The west side, where the terrain drops to a low saddle, was reinforced by a ditch with a parkan pierced earth wall and a tick gate.
The building of the Valy Castle consists mainly of semi-terrestrials with an area of 9 to 11 m2, which had a stone furnace in one of the corners. Research, which examined about 5% of the area, revealed 13 dwellings, craft workshops, farm pits and food - preparation furnaces. Palace buildings and internal functional division of the complex have not been identified.
Bojná complex consists of a wider system, which includes the Bojná II Castle, the Bojná III Castle with a mohylic burial ground, line fortifications Bojná IV - Nové valy, the Halštat Castle Bojná V - Halšiny and the Biritual Mohylová burial site Bojná VI. The system also includes the localities in the cadastre of the village Vozokany and around the village of Závada, including the castle on the hill Marhat. In Nitrianska Blatnica there is a fortified courtyard and a cemetery from the 9th to 11th century.
Systematic research started at the beginning of the 21st century under the Archaeological Institute of SAV in Nitra. In the determination of chronology, methods of LiDAR field scanning, geophysical survey, dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating were used. Dendrochronological analysis of the structural elements of the ramparts in Bojná I confirmed the conversion to the fort about 890 and the last repairs around 920.
The area is registered by the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under number ÚZPF 142. The location provides factual evidence of the development of Slavic settlement in the Central Danube and the establishment of fortified centres.

We welcome you to the village of Bojná, in the heart of the Nitra region, where there is a place in front of you with fascinating history. You stand in front of a castle that is a silent witness to ancient times, when the identity of our ancestors formed here. Now that you look around, you may see only a peaceful landscape, but beneath your tracks and a comprehensive network of ancient fortifications is hidden in the area. Feel the atmosphere of this place because it was here more than a thousand years ago that strategic interests, business travels and ambitions of the early Slavonic tribes met.
Let's just get together in time to understand why this place was so important. The story of this area begins in the seventh and eighth centuries. At that time the early-Slovak development phase, which was associated mainly with the locality of Bojná III - Žihľadník. During this period, the first people who chose this location were settled here, not by accident. If you look at the terrain around you, you will realize that this place offered an excellent overview of the surroundings. The whole agglomeration operated from about the seventh to the tenth century and its main advantage was control of the strategic communication route. Who controlled the Bojňa, controlled the movement of people and goods in this region.
Let us continue walking in history into the ninth century. There is a significant change in this period. There is a large Moravian phase coming up with the transfer of the settlement centre. The centre of social and defence life is moved to the locations of Bojná I and Bojná II. Imagine how architecture and the organisation of space are changing at this time. The year 890 was the key moment when the extensive reconstruction of the Bojná Castle took place Even for a real fortress. It was not just a mere seat, but a strategic point that would resist attacking and demonstrating the power of rulers. Last time were fortification repairs in Bojná locality I implemented around 920. But then came the era of change. In the first half of the tenth century, the center disappeared. This was linked to the formation of the Hungarian state, which changed the political map of the region and the old castles lost their original function, slowly starting to sink into oblivion and bury under the layers of the earth.
now pay attention to what we can derive from archaeological knowledge in terms of architecture and construction. Although you can't see the high walls of stone today, as we know them from later medieval castles, these were impressive buildings. Note the area of the Bojná I castle. Imagine that this area, which measures about ten acres [10 ha], was demolished by a mighty rampart at the time of its glory. This wall was not just a pile of land, but it was built by special chamber technique. This means that wood, earth and stone were combined to create a stable and solid structure that was very difficult to go beyond.
In addition to the wall itself, it was complemented by a trench. Try to imagine how deep and insurmountable this trench was for the attackers. The combination of a deep trench and a tall chamber wall made Bojná so-called hardness, which provided no feathers to anyone behind its walls. It's fascinating to think about how much work and material the Vczasnoslovan construction assaults had to spend on building this vast field system in which you are now moving.
Although in historical sources we cannot exactly name the specific personalities that lived or ruled here, the very size and complexity of the castle tells us much about the people who worked here. They were not just ordinary farmers, but an organised community with a clear hierarchy, able to coordinate large construction projects. She was probably the administrative and military center where important issues of the region were dealt with and where representatives of power from Great Moravia met.
One of the greatest mysteries and attractions of this place is how long it has been hidden from modern knowledge. Only at the beginning of the single twenty-first century began systematic research under the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. It is thanks to them today that we know about chamber vale technique and the precise time frame of development from early-noslovak tribes to the demise in the early Hungarian period. It is amazing that the earth has kept this information for so long, and only in recent decades have we been able to rediscover the meaning of this strategic point.
So you are standing in a place that was the key to controlling trade routes and witnessing the rise and fall of a large political entity. From early-Slovak Žihľajník to the Great Moravian Fortress to the silent collapse of the meadows and forests.
We are inviting you now to further explore the surroundings. Go through the area slowly, see the silence of this country and try to imagine the noise of buildings, noises in walls and strategic plans that were implemented thousands of years ago. We hope this short trip to the past has helped you to better understand the importance of the Bojná Castle. Thank you for your attention and we wish you a pleasant next day to discover our common roots.
Tips for visitors
Spring and autumn months are suitable for visiting, as lower vegetation allows for better visibility of the terrain. Due to the archaeological nature of the site we recommend shoes with fixed soles. When shooting, we recommend using the time before sunset, which will better highlight the relief of the terrain and contours of former fortifications. The place is suitable for a walk in nature, although the visible tracks of the fort are minimal. Other attractions of the Nitra region can be visited nearby.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the locality of Hradisko in Bojná will wake up with the arrival of the first flowers and greenery. It is recommended that footwear with a firm sole, as the soil after winter rains may be moist and muddy. Good time to visit is the morning part of the day.
Since this is an archaeological site with a small amount of shade, a hat and plenty of drinking water are recommended. It is best to come early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the strongest glow.
Autumn is a period in the Nitra region when vegetation is colored into golden and brown tones. The fallen leaves make the terrain clearer. Practical is layered clothing that can handle both morning cold and afternoon heat.
Zimą Hradisko is a waste. There is silence near the snow cover. When visiting this period, warm, waterproof shoes and layered winter clothes are key. The best time is noon, when natural daylight allows better orientation in the field.
