Welcome to Merašice. Right now you are standing in a place that carries the peace and spiritual depth of the rural landscape of the Trnava region. In front of you, there is a cross with a corpus on the pillar, a monument standing here as a silent witness to history and a symbol of the faith of the locals. When you look at it, you may be the first to be interested in its simplicity and humility as it completes the color of this place. It is an object that does not protrude by its monumentality, but rather by its presence, which invites us to stop for a moment in today's busy world.

Although the exact time of origin of this cross remains shrouded by the mystery and the names of its creators or donators have not been preserved in archival documents, its existence is inextricably linked to the tradition of building small sacral monuments, which were in the past a common part of the Slovak country. Such crosses have often been planted at crossroads, at the entrance to municipalities or in places of particular importance to the community. They were a place of prayer, thanksgiving, as well as requests to protect the crops or health of families. Although we do not know the specific story of his birth, we can assume that he came from the sincere need of believers to confess their faith and leave behind a trail reminiscent of the values on which society was built.

Now I invite you to take a closer look at this cross. Note his overall composition. You see in front of you a pillar that serves as a base for the cross itself with the Crucified Christ. It is this combination of pillar and corpus that is a typical element that brings a vertical dimension into space. Focus your attention on representing the figure of Christ. Although the time and influences of the weather have left their mark on the surface, it is this patina that adds to the memory of authenticity and the sense of connection to the generations that the cross has passed before us. See the proportions of the work and the way the cross is planted in the surrounding terrain. It is in details such as working stone or making a corpus that the crafty skill of anonymous masters, who have sought the most faithfully depiction of the suffering and hope the cross represents in Christian iconography.

It's fascinating to think about how many people have passed this place over decades or centuries. Each of them had his own worries, joys, secret wishes, or prayers. This cross was a silent witness to the changes in the village, the rotation of seasons, festive parades and silent conversations of individuals with God. Although we do not have the names of historical personalities directly linked to its construction, we can say that its true creators and guardians are generations of Merashians. By their respect for this place, they have ensured that the cross still stands and fulfills its function as a spiritual point in the area of the village.

The mystery that can come to mind when we look at this cross is the question of what everything had to wait out during its existence. How many storms, how many social changes and how many human destinies took place in his shadow? Sometimes the quietest sights are the most eloquent. This cross does not remind us of the great battles or of the glorious kings, it reminds us of something much more significant - the everyday human existence, which is anchored in values beyond our short earthly time. It is a reminder that even in the smallest village each piece of the earth has its own story and each monument has its place in the mosaic of our history.

I hope this short stop by the cross with the corpus in Merashice has pleased you and brought you some peace. However, Merasice also offers other corners and stories that are worth exploring. I invite you to continue walking, to see the atmosphere of the local streets and to look for further traces of the past that are hidden in architecture or in the narratives of the local inhabitants. Thank you for taking your time to this place and wish you many nice experiences in getting to know our region. Goodbye.

For children

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine you're just passing through time. Do you feel the difference? There are no cars around you, no cell phones, not even electric lights. The air smells like freshly mowed grass, and only horses are heard in the distance. We were just in 1663. It's incredible 363 years ago! At that time, something special happened in the village of Merašice. Local people have decided to build something that will stand here for generations. They built a stone cross with the figure of Christ, which still guards the peace of the surroundings.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Merasice brings a gradual awakening of nature, when the surroundings of the stone cross with the corpus of Christ begin to green and bloom. The atmosphere is peaceful, ideal for meditation, while soft spring light highlights the details of stonework on the pillar. I recommend to visit the monument in the morning when the air is fresh and surrounding green is not yet fully developed, which allows a better view of the object itself. Do not forget solid shoes, as the terrain around can be soaked and muddy after rainy days.

Summer is the time when the cross becomes a significant element in the illuminated country of the Trnava region. Intense sunlight during the day creates sharp contrasts on the statue of Christ, so the best time for photography is just before sunset when light is softer and warmer. In view of the high temperatures, I recommend planning a visit early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid dust. In summer, the surroundings of the monument are easily accessible, but don't forget to cover your head and plenty of fluids, as you won't find any shadow at the cross.

Autumn brings melancholy mood to Merasice, underlined by fallen leaves and dry weather. In this period, the historical character of the monument stands out in contrast with the muted colors of the surrounding nature, creating a unique atmosphere for lovers of history and peace. Since the days are significantly shortening, I recommend a visit at lunchtime when visibility is the best. It is appropriate to choose layered clothing and waterproof footwear, as autumn weather is variable and moisture can be kept around the cross.

Winter supplies the cross with the Crucified Christ a hallmark of loneliness and silence, especially if the landscape covers a layer of snow. During this period, the monument is best visible, since the trees in the surrounding area are without leaves, which allows for an undisturbed view of the detailed processing of the corpus. Plan your visit for the time around noon, when the sun is the highest and snow is a beautiful league. Don't forget to wear very warm clothes, gloves and cap, because with longer stay on site you can quickly be surprised by the cold, especially if the wind blows from the surrounding fields.
