Townhouse - Bratislava-Old Town Memorial

The townhouse is a significant monument in Bratislava-Old Town, which we date to the 13th century. This article focuses on the history and architecture of this house.

During the Middle Ages were wooden houses (typologically very close to folk architecture), uniquely at solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced by the material, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

The tower house was a typical example of the burgher house during this period. It was a block multi-storey building, situated on a plot with a high stone wall as a rule as part of it in the line of a building block, street, square.

The chamber house was not different from the farmhouse, it had a simple longitudinal floor plan. The facade was situated front room, the court-oriented chamber and between them in the middle part was located black kitchen.

Hall house was a typical example of a burgher's house with a pass. It was a continuous space in the width of the whole plot, the so-called hall, which was used mainly as an operating space in the implementation of crafts.

The house with passage was extremely well functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of the city residential building.

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the city, which related to its functions in the county or military administration.

Pavlačové houses were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard, accessible through two opposite crossings, to which were opened three- to four-storey facades with orbiting spiders, making available individual apartments.

Townhouse, Andreja Street Smoth 5, Banska Štiavnica is a remarkable example of the burgher house of the late Renaissance period and Baroque. It retains the overall expression and ground plan-space track.

Welcome to the heart of Bratislava, the historic Old Town, where every stone under your feet tells a story from ancient times. Right now you are standing in front of a building that is a silent witness to many centuries of town - a typical burgher house. When you look at it, you may at the first moment see only one of the many facades in this alley, but if you stop and feel the atmosphere of this place deeper, you will start to feel the breath of history that stretches much deeper than it seems at first sight.

Let's go back in time together. To understand what lies ahead, we need to move up to the thirteenth century. It was during this period that the original foundation of this townhouse was established. Imagine Bratislava not as a modern metropolis, but as a growing business and strategic centre. In the thirteenth century, the first townspeople, people who built their homes near the castle and trade routes, began to settle here. This house is one of the rare places that has survived for so long and still reminds us of the period of the first flowering of the city. At the time, these houses were symbols of the stability and prosperity of families engaged in trade or trade.

However, time is passing and the city is changing. If we move a few centuries forward, we will reach the seventeenth century. During this period Bratislava experienced an interesting change. The city has become an important administrative center, which naturally increased the interest of the nobility to reside directly in the city. Noble families no longer wanted to live in their landlords but needed to be near power, offices, and courts. Townhouses, like the one you are facing now, have become attractive locations for the higher classes of society. This trend changed not only the city's population but also gradually influenced how these houses were adapted and who they were owned.

Nyni pay attention to the architecture itself and to what you see before you. Although we do not know the names of the specific architects who worked on this house, we can follow their tracks to the development of styles. Around the year a thousand six hundred passed many burgher houses in Bratislava significant reconstructions. If you look at the overall shape and rhythm of the building, you can see the effects of the late Renaissance and Baroque. These two styles brought new elegance, symmetry, and a desire for representativeness to the city. The Renaissance sought harmony, and the Baroque added dynamism and pomps to it. It is these layers of style that create the unique face of Bratislava's Old Town, which we admire today.

Let's go a little further into the eighteenth century. At this time, so - called pavlač houses began to develop in the city. If you imagine the inner structure of the building, you'd probably find a central courtyard that was the heart of the whole house. Pavlač, a kind of open corridor or gallery, allowed access to individual rooms on several floors without having to walk through other rooms. This architectural element was then very practical and enabled efficient use of space in a densely stopped city building. Note how houses in this area use height and how simple dwellings suddenly became multi-storey buildings with complex interior arrangements.

Who lived in these walls? Although history has not kept the names of all the owners, we can imagine the lives of the people who have passed through here. Imagine an ambitious man from the thirteenth century who founded his family nest here. Later, imagine a nobleman in the seventeenth century who came from a long journey to deal with important administrative matters in the city. These walls witnessed trade agreements, family rejoicing, but also political intrigue that took place in the city centre. The house was not just a place of housing, but a center of social and economic life.

Perhaps you will now be interested in one interesting thing that makes this house a real treasure. The greatest mystery and fascinating fact is his age. The fact that the monument is dated up to the thirteenth century is very special in the context of urban buildings, which have undergone many fires, wars and reconstructions. Now, when you look back at the facade, realize that there is a building in front of you that stood here in the thirteenth century, where you are now standing. She survived the regime change, the development of the city from a small settlement on a big city and adapted to the needs of people from different times.

This house is not only a pile of stones and mortar, but a living archive of Bratislava history. It's a story of how the city changed, how people's needs changed, and how architecture adapted to new trends from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. It is fascinating to think how many generations of people have passed through his threshold and how many stories have been hidden forever in his walls.

Before we say goodbye and you go further to your discoveries, I suggest you once again quietly perceive the overall shape of this house. Try to imagine what he looked like hundreds of years ago, when people moved around in period clothing and the streets were not as busy as they are today.

Thank you for your attention and the time you have devoted to this townhouse. Now I invite you to continue exploring the streets of the Old Town. Let yourself be guided by your curiosity and look for other traces of the past that await you around every corner. I wish you a pleasant and inspiring walk through Bratislava. Goodbye.
