Monument: burgher's house in Poprad

Poprad, Prešov region, Slovakia

The townhouse is a typical urban residential building, located in the center of Poprad. This article focuses on the history and architecture of this important monument.

During the Middle Ages were wooden houses (typologically very close to folk architecture), uniquely at solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced by the material, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

The tower house was a typical urban residential building, which was located on a plot with a high stone wall. The economic object was situated at the opposite end of the plot. Tower houses together formed an effective defense system.

The chamber house had a simple longitudinal floor plan and was extremely convenient to expand the buildings on mostly narrow medieval plots. The passage allowed the extension of the living area at the superstructure of another floor.

The house with passage was extremely well functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of the city residential building.

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the city, which related to its functions in the county or military administration. The noble house was bought next to each other - sometimes two to three plots - and it was rebuilt into representative buildings.

The population in cities was growing. Residential rental houses ensured a much higher population density. They followed the traditions of the city's palace with tectonics, embodiments, and entrances to passages, which were often provided with handy metal gates.

Pavlače houses were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard, accessible through two opposite crossings. Common sanitation facilities were located at the end of the pail.

The town house in Banská Štiavnica included an older unorganized building, leaving narrow streets between the buildings. The cellars, dug into the rock subsoil, crossed into the galleries in some houses, which were the remnant of the former activity.

The architectonic concept of the facade is partially modified by modification of the parter. The mass expression interferes with the removal of part of the volume of the side wing.

This article seeks to present the history and architecture of burgher's house in Poprad, which is an amazing example of architectural heritage. The monument is now a part of the urban unit and represents the type of burgher house of the period of late Renaissance and Baroque.

Welcome to Poprad. Right now, you are standing in front of a historic burgher's house and you are ready to know his story. When you look ahead to yourself, you see a structure that witnesss ancient times and remembers the changes in this region. Look at its facade and perceive the atmosphere that this monument radiates to its surroundings.

Let's go back in time and see how this house originated and what its historical context was. The year was 1500 when the history of this townhouse in Poprad began to be written. It was born at a time when cities grew and new forms of life took place. It was not the palace of the monarch, but an important building that served the needs of the then inhabitants and reflected the lifestyle of that time.

Nyni pay attention to the architecture itself and the details you have right in front of you. The architects behind the birth of this building remain unknown in history, but their work speaks for itself. When you look at the facade and the overall building solution, you realize that this is a typical example of the burgher architecture of your time. Let us turn to another important chapter, 1750. At that time, there was an interesting social change. The nobles began massively buying burgher houses and gradually rebuilding them to their representative premises. This transformation brought new demands on the appearance and layout of the premises, which originally poured the burgher character of the buildings into a more noble form.

When we search for the key stories and personalities that have been minted with this place, we need to build on available historical records. Although the names of concrete builders, original owners or noblemen who later owned and modified the house have not been preserved until today and remain unknown, the story of the building itself is eloquent enough. It's the story of the generations who lived here, worked and changed their surroundings according to the needs of their time.

As for the attractions and mysteries associated with this burgher house, it is good to stick to the facts. No special secrets or extraordinary curiosity are attached to this building. Available documentation brings us clear historical and architectural information about the town house in Poprad, and no exaggerated or imaginary facts are provided. The beauty of this place lies not in myths, but in its authenticity and real historical legacy.

Finally, I would like to invite you to further explore not only this house, but also the whole area of Poprad, which offers many more historical stops. Thank you for your attention, I wish you a pleasant experience of discovering local history and goodbye to other wanderings.
