St. Stephen's Church with an area in the town district of Matejovce Poprad in Prešov region is a historical set from the 13th century. The complex contains a Gothic church, a church cemetery, a wall of the wall and a Renaissance bell tower from the 17th century, which belongs to the group of Spiš Renaissance bell towers.

St. Stephen's church dates from the 1970s and is built in Gothic style. Church cemetery dates Monument office of the Slovak Republic until the second half of the 13th century. The stone wall without specific essays was generally created between 1806 and 1869.

The bell tower in the area is a brick four-storey building on a square floor plan, which is connected by the west side to the wall. Probably originated in the middle of the 17th century. Ground floor with floor of trampled earth is encircled by a rolling vault. It has a portal with flat translation on the south side and a narrow slot window. The second and third floors have wooden ceilings and small square windows with stone lining. Between the ground floor and the highest floor are inserted two low floors connected by a wooden staircase, which probably served to expand the warehouse. Entrance to the bell tower is on the side of the church, staircase on the upper floor leads to the wall thickness.

The object has on all sides of the bihorium with stone stings and sledges decorated with diamond pattern. The original sgraffitical rise was replaced by a stucco in the 19th century. This included corner blockage at the bottom, pair of lyrics at the top, and the motif of intersecting arches under the ledge. Renaissance attic was later replaced by simple triangular shields. The preserved exterior detail is a curved friezes on stone consoles at the bottom of the third floor. The bell stool is new, steely and carries three bells. The smaller bell from 1981 is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The largest bell from 1726 is written in Latin and German: About REX GLOIRE VENI CUM PACE GOT DER SEI MIT UNS. TOMAS SCHWARTZ GEORGI BARTZ ANNO 1726 RENOVATUM EST.

The building development of bell towers is linked to dating interventions. The reconstruction of 1728 is evidenced by a four-leaf stone table with a German inscription on the north side. The Canonic Visit from 1832 confirms the 1728 correction at the expense of the Church and the further repair from 1820 at the cost of the city. The Latin inscription on the northern shield records the 1885 renovation. In 1993 there was a memorial reconstruction in which the original form of the building was returned.

Welcome to Poprad, the heart of the Prešov region. Right now you are facing one of the most important monuments of the city, in front of St. Stephen's Church. When you look ahead like this, you see a pre-eastern area that connects several centuries of history and architecture. It is a place where time has stopped and where each stone tells its own story about the spiritual and social life of the inhabitants of this region. Feel the atmosphere of this place, which immediately takes you deep into the past.

Let's take a look at when and how this complex originated. If we return to the church itself, its roots go back to the deep Middle Ages. This Gothic temple dates back to the 1970s. Imagine what events have been going through this place ever since. The church is closely connected to the church cemetery, which was established in the second half of the same century. Thus, it is a space that has accompanied people in their happiest but also in the most difficult moments of life for over seven hundred years.

Nyny pay attention to what you see right in front of you, namely the Renaissance bell tower. Although the church is much older, the belfry you are now observing comes from the middle of the seventeenth century. It is an extremely important building element because it belongs to a unique set of Spiš Renaissance bells. These buildings are typical of this region and represent a specific architectural style that is not located just anywhere in this pure form.

Now look closer to the details of the bell tower. Note the upper parts of it, where biphoria is located. These are two-piece windows with stone stings that add elegance and lightness to the construction. If you look more closely at the Romans that decorate these windows, you will see a fascinating diamond pattern. This detail is a typical feature of Renaissance aesthetics, which tried to combine geometric accuracy with artistic feeling. It is these elements that make Poprad belfry a real jewel of regional architecture.

If we now look at the chronology of the changes that took place on this building, we will find that the belfry required care in several stages. In 1728 it went through the first major reconstruction. A hundred years later, in 1820, the bell tower was repaired at the expense of the city, indicating how much weight the city of Poprad attached to maintaining this monument in good condition. Another renovation followed in 1885. The most recent significant intervention took place in 1993, when the restoration was carried out. The purpose of this last repair was to restore the bell tower to its original form so that we could admire it exactly as the generations before us saw it.

You may wonder who the architects of these buildings were or who the famous personalities worked with this place. Here we come to one of the many mysteries of historical monuments. Names of concrete builders who designed this Gothic church or Renaissance bell tower remained unknown in time. It is fascinating that the work that survived centuries and served thousands of people was created by the hands of masters whose names are not written in chronicles. Their identity remains hidden, but their talent and skill are now tangible in every stone cut out and in every detail of the diamond pattern.

So far, we have been mainly devoted to the bell tower and the overall framework. Now let us stop for a moment and think about what it means to be part of the Spiš regional ensemble. The set of Spiš Renaissance bells is more than just a group of buildings. It is a testimony to the richness and cultural level of Spiš, which was an important commercial and spiritual center in the times of its prosperity. That the bell tower from the mid - seventh century survived in Poprad is a great happiness for all of us.

When you look around, see the contrast between the massive Gothic church and the detailed softness of the Renaissance bell tower. It is a dialogue of two different eras that coexist in one complex in complete harmony. This space is not only a set of buildings but a living archive that tells us how the priorities, tastes and technical possibilities of builders have changed over the centuries.

Before we say goodbye, I recommend you devote a few minutes to the quiet business area. Walk slowly around the church and the bell tower, touch by looking at the stone stings of the bells and imagine the bells from this tower hundreds of years ago when the inhabitants of Poprad called for prayer or warned them of danger.

I hope this short trip to history has helped you to better understand the value of St. Stephen's Church and its area. It's a place that deserves respect and attention. Now you can continue your exploration of the city of Poprad and discover other hidden treasures of this beautiful region. Thank you for your attention and we wish you a pleasant day full of new discoveries.

Tips for visitors

Imagine having a key in your hand from time to time. It's not just a small jump, it's the whole way back to the seventh century. You travel to a time when roads were not asphalted, but full of mud, stones, and dust. At that time, in the seventies of the thirteenth century, this great building began to be built here. Everything was different. Life was slower, and every new wall was a huge achievement for the people who lived there.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the area of St. Stephen's Church in Poprad is green. The sun highlights the details of the facade. We recommend a visit in the morning. Due to variable weather is appropriate layered clothing and waterproof footwear.

In summer, the interior of the church is colder than in the exterior. The neighborhood is in a flower. Due to high temperatures it is advisable to visit the area early in the morning or late in the evening. Light clothing and sun protection are recommended.

In the autumn it changes the color of the leaves. The low sun creates long shadows, which is suitable for photography architecture. With clear skies, it is advisable to wear a lightweight sweater or jacket. Due to unstable weather, we recommend a waterproof coat.

Zimą snow covers the terrain. Days are short and lighting weaker. Due to frost and snow we recommend warm winter clothes, hat, gloves and footwear with anti-skid soles.
