The historical building of the Slovak National Theatre is a newly renaissance building on Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava. The 1886 building is a national cultural monument. It served as the seat of the Slovak National Theatre until the opening of the new building.

On the site of the present construction has been operating since 1776 the city theatre, which was built by Count Juraj Csáky according to projects by Matej Walch. Today's building was created according to the designs of Vienna's architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, who built 45 theatres in Europe. Their approach combined the Central European Baroque-Renaissance blend with French elements. The implementation was provided by Ignác Feigler ml., which built the building from August 1884 to September 1886.

The building is characterized by a dull and monumental double staircases in one space, which are moved by half the floor. The facade carries the statues of József Attila and Franz Liszt. Above the main portal is located a stone group of Museum Tálie from Viennese sculptor T. Friedla along with the puttas with the symbols of tragedy and comedy from Victor Tilgner's workshop. In front of the building there is Ganymeda fountain, which is also author Viktor Tilgner. In ovals above the loggia were originally placed stone busts of music composers.

The facade of the building originally decorated five busts of personalities: F. Liszta, W. Shakespeare, J. W. Goethe and Hungarian writers J. Katon and M. Vörösmarty, created by W. Marhenko. After repairs of the facade in 1936, the busts were composed and transferred to the property of the Slovak National Gallery in 1972, with the exception of the busty Vörösmarty, which disappeared. In 2003, copies were planted in the original place, and the missing was replaced by W. A. Mozart bust by Ivan Herenyi.

At the opening of September 22, 1886, 800 gas lamps lit the interior. Foyers adorned the allegorical images of K. Sleepyi and the aspect of Baron L. Lüttgendorf-Leinburg. The building first served German and Hungarian ensembles for staggion performances, since 1920 it is the seat of the Slovak National Theatre.

In 1935 the building underwent reconstruction of the technical equipment stage. In 1949 repair of the foundations damaged by bombing and restoration of perspective, foyer and salon on the first floor followed. The fundamental reconstruction took place between 1969 and 1972 according to Ing. Arch. Rajmunda Hirtha and the concept of Vladimir Hazuchy. Part of this stage was the construction of an extension on Comenius Square, where there are rehearsal and dressing rooms. Due to the conservation of monuments, the facade, interior view, foyer entrance and salon on the first floor remained preserved. In the auditorium, the number of places to increase the comfort of viewers decreased.

The capacity is 609 spectators and the area of the orchestra 72 m2 with a maximum width of 15 m. The portal mirror measures 10,5 m in width and 7 m in height. The stage is 18 m wide, 17.5 m deep and 21.3 m high. The turntable has a diameter of 13 m. The building has buffets on the second floor, smoking on the ground floor and on the third floor, as well as a central dressing room in the basement.

Welcome to the heart of Bratislava's Old Town. Right now you are standing in front of one of the most prominent and proudest buildings in our capital - in front of the Slovak National Theatre. When you look at it, you will immediately be swallowed up by its magnificence and the cultural depth that emerges from it. It is a place where art, history and architecture meet, and which has defined the spiritual face of this city for over a century. Feel the atmosphere of this place, where lights are lit each evening and curtains are opened to new stories. Let's now look at how this monumental work was created. The building you see before you comes from 1886. At that time's contextual level, it was important to create a space that would match the status of the city and the needs of the then society. The project was taken up by Vienna architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. If these names do not sound familiar to you, you may be surprised by the fact that the couple were in their time absolute masters of theatre architecture. Throughout Europe, they designed and built up up up to threety-five theatres, making them the commercial architects of their era. Their aim was to create spaces that are not only functional in terms of acoustics and scenery but also visually stunning. Nyni pay attention to the architecture itself. When you look at the facade and the overall character of the building, note its distinctive neo-Baroque style. Neobarok in this case means a return to the precision, ornament and dynamics we knew from the Baroque period, but with the contribution of the then technical options and the aesthetic trend of the late 19th century. It is a style that is supposed to create a feeling of luxury and grandeur, which is ideal for the theater building, because the visitor has already before entering the hall to feel that he is entering the world outside of everyday life. If you had the opportunity to perceive the interior, there is one detail that is the absolute highlight of the brilliantness of the Vienna architects. It is a monumental double staircase, located in one common space. What makes them architecturally unique is the fact that they are moved by half the floor. This detail is not only an aesthetic playful element, but creates a sense of lightness in the space, although it is a massive structure. It is a place where nobles, artists and intellectuals met in the past, while the stairs themselves served almost as a scene where the social ritual of vision and betting took place before the performance. Although the specific personalities that accompanied the building at its creation are not specified in our documents, the theatre itself witnesss the stories of thousands of actors, directors and musicians. Each of them brought their passion and talent to these walls. The theater is not only a building of stone and wood, it is a living organism that breathes in the rhythm of sands and quiet moments before lifting the curtain. Finally, I'm going to tell you one interesting thing that will help you better understand the meaning of this place. Imagine the moment when the building opened on September 22. It was the time when culture became the main pillar of social life. The fact that Bratislava has acquired a building from architects as well as Fellner and Helmer, who have built so many theatres in Europe, shows how high the value of the city was already at the time. You stand before the symbol of Slovak culture, which has survived many changes and centuries. Now I invite you to go around the building for a while, to see its neo-baroque details, and to imagine how the first tones of music sounded over a hundred thirty years ago. Thank you for taking this short tour with us. We wish you a pleasant day in Bratislava and possibly an opportunity to visit the interior of this magnificent theatre.

Tips for visitors

We recommend to visit the building in the evening before the performance when it is illuminated. Since theater games are held here, we recommend monitoring the official program.

The building is located in the historical centre with limited traffic.

We recommend more formal clothing when visiting the show. We recommend to the photographers the exteriors of the building and the view from Hviezdoslav Square, especially during the hour of gold, before eclipse.

Families with children can explore the surroundings of the building and its architecture, although the interiors are primarily designed for theater audience.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the Slovak National Theatre are brightened with green color and flowering surfaces give the building a fresh look. The sun during this period provides natural lighting suitable for photographing the facade. It is recommended to visit the place in the morning when the air is clean. Suitable is layered clothing that can handle variable spring weather.

Summer season brings to the center of Bratislava an intense atmosphere and rich colors. The building acts monumentally in the sun's glow, but high temperatures can be challenging. The best time to visit is early morning or later evening when the air is cooler and the city is quieter. Light, breathable clothing and protection from direct sunlight are recommended.

Autumn puts the surrounding trees in golden and red tones, creating a contrast with the theater architecture. Lighting is softer and warm in this period. When planning, frequent rains and winds are to be expected, so it is advisable to have an eavesdropping coat and suitable shoes.

Zimą is dominated in the vicinity of the building by a cold atmosphere, which in Advent time complements the festive lighting. The facade of the theater in the dark excels thanks to artificial light. Due to low temperatures and possible snow, it is essential to dress warm winter clothes, including gloves and a cap, to handle the freezing wind in the city center.
