The Greek Catholic Church of Our Lady of Protection in the village Nižný Komárnik in Prešov region is a wooden church from 1938. It's a Bojkovsky-type church with a wooden log dome.

The building was built in 1938 on the site of an older temple of the Lemkovsky type, which was damaged during the First World War and later demolished. Rusyn masters and villagers cooperated in the construction work. The project was developed by Ukrainian architect and Kunsthisorist Ing. Volodymyr Sičynsky.

Architecturally, the temple is different from the Lemko type by not highlighting three parts of the towers of different heights, but emphasis is placed on covering the temple ship. The building stands on a stone foundation wall. In front of the entrance there is a portikus ending with a tympanon with a cross and carved columns, which represents the folk transformation of classicistic style. The domes are finished with pyramidal turrets with forged iron crosses. These parts are covered with sheet metal, the rest of the building is covered with shingles. On the south side of the altar part there is a small sacristy with its own entrance. The visual side is complemented by double windows and colours in pale yellow, light blue and dark red shade.

The interior comes from the construction period of the temple. Iconostas was probably brought from Trebišov and according to V. Grešlík comes from the iconography workshop of the Bohdan family from Polish Jasiel.

During the front fights in autumn 1944 the temple was not significantly damaged. The first corrections were carried out in 1946 and extensive work in the mid-60s. In 1968 the building was declared a national cultural monument as part of the Východoslovenská wooden churches ensemble. In the mid - 1990 ' s, J. Lesko from Svidník. In 2004 and 2005 other reconstruction and restoration works were carried out on the iconostasis, which were carried out by the administrator of the parish Mgr. J. Popovce with the help of the ktitors and natives.

The building was created from the cooperation of a professional architect and folk masters in order to transfer the vision of Carihrad brick cerkví from the 5th century into wooden design. The building is represented in Slovakia by the Bojkovský type of wooden construction.

Welcome to Nižný Komárnik. You are facing an outstanding witness to the history and spiritual tradition of this region, which is the temple of the Greek Catholic Virgin Mary of Protection. Now that you're looking at it, you might be impressed by its natural harmony with surrounding landscapes and the feeling of peace that is drawn from this wooden structure. It is a place where faith, craft, and architecture meet, and although it may seem subtle at first glance, it hides a story of endurance and restoration.

Let us now look together at how this temple originated and in what historical context it stood. The building you see before you dates back to 1938. But in order to understand why it came about at this very time, we need to rush through our minds a little further. This was the place where the older temple, which was built in Lemkovsky style, was built. However, the older object did not survive the devastating effects of World War I. The damage was so great that the building had to be demolished. It was from the need for a spiritual center for the local inhabitants that this present temple was built right in the interwar period.

Nyní pay attention to the architecture itself, because there is a detail that is very rare for the whole of Slovakia. If you look at the overall composition of the building, you will notice something specific. This church represents the so-called Bojkovsky type of wooden construction on our territory. The main feature you can now observe is the wooden log dome. This architectural element is typical for certain areas of Carpathians and its presence in Nižný Komárnik makes this building a unique example within the Slovak wooden architecture. The project was helped by the Ukrainian architect Volodymyr Sičynsky, who put his expertise and knowledge of traditional timber construction into the building.

By overlooking the outward appearance, consider the challenges that this temple experienced so soon after its construction. Just a few years after completion, in 1946, the temple had to be repaired. The reason for this was the front fights from World War II that went through this region and left their mark on the building. It is fascinating to see that this object is not only an aesthetic element of the country, but also an epitome of survival.

Let's move on to recognising the value of this place. In 1968 the company was perceived so strongly that the church was declared a national cultural monument. However, it was not declared separately, but as part of a wider, significant ensemble called East Slovakian wooden churches. This means that this church is recognised as an important link in the traditional architecture chain of the whole eastern Slovakia.

If you stop by now and think about the interior behind the walls, you are aware that in 2004 the temple underwent an important reconstruction. The most attention was paid then to restaurant work on the iconostasis. Iconostasis is a key element in the Greek Catholic temples that separates the room for believers from the sanctuary, and its preservation in good condition is essential for maintaining the spiritual identity of this place.

An interesting thing that may not be immediately apparent is the very contrast between the Lemko type of building that was originally here and the boyfriend type you see today. An overview of the change in styles within one location shows us how influences and preferences in wooden construction in the region have changed. It's almost like reading a book on the migration of ideas and craft skills across borders.

So you stand before a building that is unique in many ways. From the Volodymyr Sičynsky project from 1938, through overcoming the consequences of the war, to modern restoration works from the 21st century. All of this is made up of the temple of the Virgin Mary the Protector, which carries the memory of generations.

I'm inviting you now to another study. Feel the quietness of this place, admire the log structure in detail, and feel the atmosphere that this wooden temple has preserved for centuries. I hope this short trip to history has helped you to better understand the meaning of what you see in front of you. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant next day in hugging the beauty of Prešov region.
