evangelical church Church
The Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity, located on the Main Street in Prešov, is a renaissance church building from the 17th century. This church was declared a national cultural monument on 17 April 1963.
Background and historical context
The temple was founded in 1642 when the foundation stones were laid by the evangelical priest James Jacobus. The building was finished and consecrated in 1647. During its history, the temple has undergone several dramatic changes. In 1671, the Gospels withdrew the use of the church after the suppression of the Very Conspiracy, and his report was taken over by the Jesuits. After the uprising of Imrich Tököli in 1682, the temple was returned to the Gospels, but again became the property of the Jesuits in 1687. In 1705 during the uprising of Ferenc Rákoczi II, the use of the church was restored by the Gospel. Queen of Eleanor Magdalene issued a decree in 1711 requiring the Gospels to leave the temple and build a new one in the suburbs.
After the dissolution of the Order of Jesuits in 1773, the temple went to the Era. The Gospels bought the church from the Municipality for 6,000 gold in 1784 and took it under the administration of the church overseer Žigmund Toporcer. After a large fire in 1788, which burned down the tower and roof, the temple was used by two evangelical congregations - Slovak and German.
Architecture
The church has a one-ship disposition, a three-way conclusion with chores on both sides of the ship and organ empor in the northern part. The building has a massive character with modest interior decoration that responds to the spirit of Protestantism. The main entrance is located on the north side of the college and side from the west from the former church folk school.
The exterior appearance of the church did not change significantly during its existence. During the period when it was owned by the Jesuits, the college connected the northern church's emporium with a vaulted corridor and built a wall around the temple. The Gospels of 1867 removed these elements, including the wooden railing on the chores, when rebuilding the college.
Today
Today the Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity is actively used by the Gospels and is part of the cultural and spiritual life of the village Prešov. The church is located in Prešov, Prešov region, and is accessible to visitors.
During its history, the temple has caused a number of devastating events, including large fires in 1788 and 1913. After the last fire in 1913, the altar with its original painting by Charles Brock was destroyed. The altar was repaired and instead of the original painting was inserted cloth with black cross, which later replaced the same image.
The preservation of this temple is an important task provided by the Evangelical Church a.v. in order to continue its use for future generations.
