Townhouse in Preš

The townhouse is a typical example of a residential building located in the center of Prešov. This article focuses on the history and architecture of burgher houses in Preš.

During the Middle Ages, houses were wooden, rarely with more solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced by the material from which the house was made, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

Monument: Townhouse in Preši

The house with passage was extremely well functionally usable and for a very long period became the most frequent layout type of the city residential building.

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the city, which related to its functions in the county or military administration. The noble house was bought next to each other - sometimes two to three plots - and it was rebuilt into representative buildings.

Pavlačové houses were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard, accessible through two opposite crossings, to which were opened three- to four-storey facades with orbiting spiders, making available individual apartments.

Houses of poverty, iron houses were on the outskirts of the city, often forming part of the walls. They represented the existential minimum.

The original objects were modernized mainly in the parter. Many retained their original functional use (trade), but the sales method was more oriented towards advertising.

The function of housing remained in originally residential burgher houses until today, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

The townhouse in Preš has a significant position due to the original urban aspects. Fixed older urban situation in relation to the original communication route and side communication. It is situated in a micron square as an end corner object. It represents the type of burgher house of the late Renaissance period and the Baroque.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring return to Prešov brings to the streets, where this burgher's house stands, especially gentle light and elements of the fading nature. The surrounding trees slowly green, creating a pleasant contrast with the historical façade of the building. The atmosphere is quieter and calmer at this time, allowing you to focus on architectural details without disturbing influences. Practical advice is focused on variable weather, as spring can bring both sun and transient rains. Put on layered clothes so that you can adjust to temperature fluctuations and choose shoes suitable for any wet paths. The best time to visit is noon when it has become clear, but before the arrival of larger groups of tourists, which tend to accumulate during the summer months.

Summer is in Prešov parallel to the biggest visitor, when the city is filled with life and tourists. Sunlight highlights the colors and textures of historical buildings, including this townhouse, and long gouts allow longer walks in the city district. The atmosphere is energetic and full of city sounds, which may be disturbing for some visitors. Practical advice includes preparation for higher temperatures and strong sun, so it is essential to wear lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, and sunglasses. Due to larger crowds, it is advisable to arrive as soon as possible in the morning, immediately after opening, or, on the contrary, in the late afternoon when tourist groups break up. It is essential to take enough water with you and to protect yourself from overheating.

Podzim in Prešov brings a unique atmosphere with cooler air and golden shade of falling leaves that give a romantic touch to the historical environment. The light is softer and warmer in this period, which is ideal for photography shots of the facade and surrounding the house. The atmosphere is calmer and melancholy, suitable for slower walks and lock. Practical advice relates to colder weather, so wear a warmer jacket, scarf and possibly a cap. Weather may be more humid, so we recommend waterproof shoes. The best time to visit is the afternoon when the sun shines at a lower angle and illuminates the building from the side, creating dramatic shadow effects.

Winter in Prešov offers a different, more modest view of the historical monument, often surrounded by snow or freezing air. The atmosphere is quiet and soothing, without summer rush, which allows an intimate experience of history. Light is shorter and sharp, which can highlight the contours of the building, but also cold. Practical advice is focused on freezing protection, so it is essential to wear warm layers, gloves, cap and quality winter shoes. Opening times may be shortened during the winter period, so check the current information before visiting. The best time is noon when it is warmest and the sun is still shining, making it easier to move around the freezing city and allowing safe photography without the risk of scratching surfaces.
