kostol sv.Mikuláša Church and mem.plaque
St. Nicholas Concatedrale in Prešov is a late-Gothic hall building built around the middle of the 14th century in the wider part of Prešov Square. The church with three ships, three presbyteries and 71 meters high tower went through several rebuildings and in 2008 it was promoted to concatedral. The Monument Office of the Slovak Republic records the area under the number of ÚZPF 3301, which consists of two objects - the church itself and a memorial plaque resembling the rebellion from 1918.
The church was built around the middle of the 14th century on the foundations of an older sacral building from the 13th century. From it until today, consoles on the front of the medieval triumphal arc, remnants of props and consoles in the form of a male head on the outer wall of the northern ship remained. Construction work in the following centuries affected several events, including the fire in 1418 which temporarily delayed the construction. Between 1420 and 1440 continued the enchantment of the northern presbytery with a four-armed star vault following the Czech Gothic architecture from the circuit of Peter Parler. About 1440 stood the entire winning arch, which later increased before 1489 while extending the middle presbytery.
The reconstruction phase took place between 1502 and 1515 under the leadership of Prešov builder Ján Brengyszeyn, the Levoča stonemason of master Nicholas and stonemason Michal, whose goal was to unite the previously disparate building unit. During this period they built new triships, finished the entrance hall, carved stone lining windows, and in 1511 they built a southern hall with oratorium, whose stone rails decorated the motif of rotating flames. Between 1514 and 1515, Master John rebuilt the temple tower and encircled it on its ground floor with a circular arch.
Architecturally, it is a three-shiped hall structure whose external dimensions are 54.7 metres long and 34.45 metres wide, whereas the height of internal ships is 16 metres. The main ship has a late-Gothic star canopy, while the side ships use the star and net vaults. The tower is 71 metres high, it has 200 steps, pseudogothic arcades, small towers on the corner and a high pyramid roof built in 1903. Entrance to the tower is provided by a gothic broken portal with a three-ticket in a viper. On the south side there is a late-gothic double entrance portal with richly profiled lining and a flamingo rose in the upper arms. On the north side there is a smaller portal with original Gothic carved doors from the 15th century, leading to a spiral staircase to oratory. The original main entrance portal at the end of the 18th century was reduced and introduced into it a late baroque lining with money ornaments.
Interior equipment complement wing altars ordered during late-gothic reconstruction. The main altar was created between 1490 and 1506 and connects Baroque architecture from 1696 and the original Gothic wardrobe with three nowhere and sculptures of Our Lady, St. Nicholas and St. Vojtech. Authorship of the altar is attributed to Prešov carver Ján Weiss. On the main ledge of the altar shield and on the sides of the Tabernacul are the sculptures of adore angels, which was made by Master Paul of Levoča at the beginning of the 16th century. Other sculptures were supplied by the carver J. Hartman or the author of the statue of St. Sebastian and the apostles Peter and Paul. The modern history of the church is linked to the decision of Saint Benedict XVI, who on 9 August 2008 promoted the parish church to the concatedra temple.
The monument has been undergoing reconstruction of the interior and exterior since 2010.

Welcome to Prešov. Right now, you are standing in one of the most important points of this historic city, and there is a building in front of your eyes, which is a silent witness to the century Eyes, which shaped the insecurity and glory of this region. Look at this monumental building and try for a moment to forget the noise of the modern city around you. See the weight of the stone presence that has been standing here for centuries. St. Nicholas' church is not just a sacral building; it is a pillar of Prešov's identity, a place where spiritual meets historical and where every wall seems to tell a story of durability and steadfastness.
When you look at the overall appearance of this building, see its late-gothic character. Although the exact names of architects who worked over this building remained scattered over time, their manuscript is clearly legible in every quarry and every line you see in front of you. This building, as we know it today, originated around the middle of the 14th century. It is fascinating, however, that its history is even deeper. This Gothic architecture is not only a random element in the city country, but it was raised on the foundations of an even older, thirteen-century sacral building. So you're standing in a place where centuries are strata, where older stone testimony meets the Gothic triumph.
Note how this building is perceived in space. It is a hall building. This architectural concept is important for how you perceive its interior and outer space. In indoor churches, benches and space are designed to make the main ships of the building level, creating a feeling of a uniform, harmonious and extremely spacious interior. Even though you may not have come in yet, this unity and power of late-gothic style is already emanating from its exterior. It is an architecture that acts not only as a chorus before bad weather, but as an effort to create an area that connects earthly to heavenly.
Not only is this building a historic disappointment for every lover of architecture, but it also has an exceptional status within the church and city. You may not have heard about this, but something extraordinary happened in 2008. This significant building was elevated to concaedral. This step is not just an administrative decision, but an expression of deep respect for the importance that the church has and still has for the whole area. It thus becomes a central point that bears even more responsibility and spiritual weight.
Now tell yourself what else this area offers to the surroundings. When you move around the church itself, he pays attention to the memorial board that is located in this space. This tablet is not just a piece of stone; it is a silent reminder of the 1918 rebellion. It is here, in this historical context, that religious tradition meets with turbulent political and social changes that have led to a new history period. This sign reminds us that history was not only in the books, but here, in these streets, in these shadows that are worthy of the buildings to be cast to the ground.
There is something fascinating about how the peace of St. Nicholas and the dynamics of historical coups are associated in one place. The church stands here as a firm anchor, while the world around it is constantly changing, governments are changing, people are changing, but this Gothic form remains. It is fascinating how this building can adapt to new times - from the thirteen-century beginning, through the century of Gothic blossom, to the modern role of concatedrala.
While you continue your tour, try to see the atmosphere of this place. It's not just about the building, it's about the feeling of continuity. Every stone you see here was carved to survive. When you look at the facade, you see not only the material, but you see the work of people who, hundreds of years ago, hovered this structure to heaven.
Let us leave you now with your own thoughts and observation. We invite you to continue to discover Prešov and its hidden treasures. Maybe later you'll come back to this concathedral to find peace in its silence or to look again at the details you've missed. Thank you for being with us on this short stop. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey with the rest of the city. We'll say goodbye, but the history of this place will still be waiting for you.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit St. Nicholas Church in Prešov is during the morning, when there is a pleasant peace in the historical centre and morning light beautifully highlights the architectural details of the exterior. Take with you comfortable shoes suitable for walking on historical tiles and warmer clothing. For photographers it offers the best shots around the main square, where the morning sun ideally illuminates this dominant. Since there are no specific attractions in the area, focus on discovering the rich history of the Prešov region itself and its surroundings. For families with children we recommend to combine the visit with a quiet walk through the pedestrian zone, which is safe and full of interesting corners for small discoverers.
