Townhouse in Preš

The town house is a typical urban residential building, which is located in the center of Prešov. This article is about burgher houses and their history.

Medieval

During the Middle Ages, houses were wooden, rarely with more solvent owners, brick. The types of houses were influenced by the material from which the house was made, the way of heating, the solvency of the owner and the way of defense.

Baroque Period

In the 17th and especially in the 18th century there was an increased interest of nobility in the city, which related to its functions in the county or military administration.

19th Century Period

The population in cities was growing. Residential rental houses ensured a much higher population density.

Pavlačové houses - were characterized by a closed layout of a four-winged block with a central courtyard, accessible through two opposite crossings, to which were opened three- to four-storey facades with orbiting spiders, making available individual apartments.

Houses of poverty, iron houses - were on the outskirts of the city, often forming part of the walls. They represented the existential minimum.

19th and 20th century architecture

The original objects were modernized mainly in the parter. Many retained their original functional use (trade), but the sales method was more oriented towards advertising.

The function of housing remained in originally residential burgher houses until today, only the requirements of the standard of housing changed.

Examples of burgher houses

City House, Andreja Kmeťa Street 5, Banská Bystrica Štiavnica

Townhouses in Banská Štiavnica included an older unorganized building, leaving narrow streets between the buildings. The cellars, dug into the rock subsoil, crossed into the galleries in some houses, which were the remnant of the former activity.

Structure:

1. Introduction - start with a 2-3 world summary at the beginning: what is it, where, from what time and what is remarkable 2. Creation and historical context - when, by whom and why it arose (only if it is in the background) 3. Architecture and creation - building style, materials, elements (only documented) 4. Owners, administrators, fates - who owned it, dramatic changes (only names from the background) 5. Key events and attractions - what really happened here (NOT Battles or People) 6. Today - current state and accessibility; why it is worth visiting

Welcome to Prešov. You stand by one of those objects that make up the real heart and soul of this city. In front of you is a burgher's house, a building that at first glance may not act like a monumental palace, but it is in its medium size, in its humility and architecture that the story of the entire city life that has been taking place here for centuries is hidden. Look at this building and try to imagine how this space worked at a time when the streets of Prešov were not yet filled with the sounds of modern cars, but with the rhythm of horse hooves and the voices of people who built their lives, shops and traditions. This house is not just a set of walls and roofs, it is a living witness to the urban development that tells us how society has changed and how this important eastern town was formed.

To understand why this house looks what it looks like, we need to go back to the past in our thoughts, namely the seventh century. During this period there was a particular interest in the nobility of urban residence throughout the region. The city was no longer just a defense fortress or a marketplace, becoming the centre of social life, power and culture. The nobles sought proximity to urban institutions, to trade, and to the prestige that the urban environment offered. This trend has profoundly influenced the way urban architecture has started to evolve. Buildings became more representative, spaces began to plan more precisely and the urban network became denser and more complex. Although this particular house may not belong directly to the highest aristocratic circles, its existence is a direct consequence of this historical dynamic, when the urban environment began to change under the influence of new social needs.

Over time, especially in the eighteenth century, this process has accelerated even further. Prešov, like many other cities in Europe at the time, experienced a significant increase in population. Urban borders were beginning to expand, more and more people were on the streets and the need for housing became urgent. This demographic boom brought a new type of urbanisation. It was no longer only about building large stone houses for the richest, but about creating a functional urban environment for a growing population - for the townspeople. It was during this period that the typical urban character you see in Prešov began to form. Buildings began to be built close to each other, using every piece of land available, creating the unique, dense and cozy atmosphere of the historical centre, which you can perceive now that you are standing by this house.

Now, when you look at the structure of the building itself, pay attention to its architecture, which transports us to the nineteenth century. This is the time when burgher houses in our region began to be characterized by a very specific element that is characteristic of this area - so-called pavlače houses. If you look higher at the facade or the way in which access to the higher floors is organised, you can see this architecture, which was designed to combine the privacy of the residential areas with the public character of the street. Pavlač, this open or semi-closed hallway on the outside of the building, was a brilliant solution for dense urban buildings. It allowed access to individual apartments without having to create space-intensive interior corridors in each unit. This architecture created a unique social space - the pavlač was not just a way from the point And to point B, it was where the neighbors met, where the news was exchanged, and where the private life of families connected with the city's vibrant life. Note this harmony between functionality and the aesthetic expression this type of construction brought.

Perhaps you are now looking for the names of the specific people who lived in this house, or you are asking who exactly designed its exact lines and proportions. Here we come to one of the most interesting pages of historical monuments. Many of these houses are anonymous. The architects who designed these buildings, often unknown, and the names of the townspeople who built their happiness here sometimes disappear in the folders of history. But don't doubt that this anonymity doesn't mean nonsense. It is in that we do not know specific names that this house becomes a universal symbol. It's not just a house of one family name, it's a house of town as a whole. It's the story of thousands of people who worked here, traded, raised their children, and formed the foundation of today's Presov. This building represents the collective memory of the city, not just individual history of individuals. It is a witness to everyday life, which is often more important in history than major political events, because it was this everyday life that shaped the culture and identity of our region.

Although this house is not one of the most famous monuments with a rich legend of kings or great battles, its strength lies in its authenticity. It's a piece of reality that teaches us humility to time. Notice how this building still keeps its identity in the modern element around it. It is fascinating how architecture can adapt to people's needs as centuries change, but the basic principle of housing and social contact remains.

Now that you have adopted the context in which this house has grown and you have understood its architectural significance, we invite you to continue your tour. Prešov offers an infinite number of similar stories that are just waiting to be revealed. Walk along the streets that surround you, see the details of the facades, watch the rhythm of windows and doors, and explore how the city's atmosphere changes as you move from one historical object to another. Any next step can lead you to further reveal the hidden treasure of our history. Thank you for spending time with us and for looking at this piece of Prešov with us. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey through the city.
