kunerada castle Manor house with grounds
Kunerad Castle, also known as Kaštieľ Kunerad, is a former hunting mansion located in Svitačova valley on the cadastral territory of Kunerad village in Žilina region. This castle and its area are recognized as a national cultural monument of the Slovak Republic. The castle is located at an altitude of approximately 600 metres and was built in 1916 by Count Balestrem, a Prussian junior. The original intention was to provide a holiday home to the emperors of Austria-Hungary and Germany - Francis Joseph and Vilhelm II., but this plan was not implemented due to the outbreak of World War I.
Architecturally is a manor house built in the style of modern Art Nouveau, which is according to French architecture. The castle is characterized by corner towers, victors and terraces with arcades. The manor house is approached by outdoor staircases and park, which completes the overall picture. In the vicinity of the manor house there was also the chapel of St. Teresa Jesusová. Originally, the manor house was modernly equipped and connected to its own hydroelectric power plant.
After the change of owners was completed in 2025. After the outbreak of World War I, the manor house became a family seat for the Balestrem family, who visited it. In 1944 the castle was divided by the seat of the 2nd Partisan Brigade M. R. Štefánik during SNP. The German troops on the return journey from Slovakia, however, burned it on 25 September 1944, which is marked with a memorable table.
After reconstruction in 1959 the castle served to treat respiratory diseases as a treatment room SNP Kunerad. Another reconstruction took place in 1974 and the manor house was under the administration of the Czechoslovak State Spa Rajecké Teplice, later Slovak State Spa Rajecké Teplice, respectively Slovak Medical Spa Rajecké Teplice, a.s. In 1996 the manor house together with the spa in Rajecké Teplice passed into private ownership and was used only occasionally.
During the reconstruction on 10 March 2010, a large fire struck the roof of the manor house, which together with other events led to its loss. After eight years, October 20, 2018, the castle burned down again.
Today the manor house with the area is registered with the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic under number ÚZPF 2087 and consists of three objects: park (1916), the manor house (1916) and the SNP memorial (1965). Each of these elements contributes to the historical and cultural importance of this place.
Kunerada Castle is more than an architectural monument. His history will be intertwined with important events of Slovak history, from his original focus on recreational function to his use as the seat of the guerrilla brigade. Its renewal and transitions between various purposes and owners reflect the dynamic nature of Slovak history.
Visiting the manor house offers an opportunity to see the past, where the related historical events and architectural style are intertwined. Although it is in a precarious state, the manor house offers a unique view of Slovak cultural heritage and its records. For those who are interested in historical monuments and their meaning, the Kunerada Castle is still worth visiting, although it may need patience when looking for its dreary facades.

Welcome to the beautiful Kunerada, the place where nature is associated with history in the silence of the Svitach valley. Right now, you're standing in front of a building hiding stories from the turn of two centuries. Stop for a moment, breathe in the clean air of this valley and look around you. Before you lies the Kunerada castle, more known as the manor house with an area that dominates this place. The first feeling you are likely to think of is a feeling of peace and distance from everyday bustle. It was this sense of isolation and proximity to nature that was key to choosing this place for construction.
When you look at this structure, you might wonder when and for whom it was created. To find an answer, we have to go back over a hundred years. This manor house was built in 1916. Imagine the time it was. The world shook the first world war, chaos, and insecurity ruled Europe, but it was at this tense time that this elegant object arose. His meal was Count Balestré, a Prussian junior. The word junker in this context refers to a member of Prussia's noble state who owned land and controlled the countryside. Count Balestré chose the Dawn Valley to create his refuge here.
The original purpose of this building was not a representative residence for the whole courtyard, but a hunting mansion. At that time, hunting was one of the most popular activities of the European nobles, a symbol of status and a way to spend time in equal society. The hunting manor house was supposed to provide comfort and luxury, but at the same time it was a functional place for rest after a long day spent in the forest. This is why the area is so closely connected to the surrounding country.
Now that you're standing here, pay attention to the overall appearance of the building and its area. Although you may not see monumental gates or steep walls, note the harmony with which the structure has fallen into the field. Look at the facade and see its rhythm. Consider how in 1916 this new building of the then untouched nature of the valley worked. Note how the area surrounds the main building and creates a natural transition between architecture and forests that surround you from every side. It is this symbiosis with its surroundings that is one of the most prominent elements of this place.
The key person to which this house is connected is Count Balestré. It is fascinating to imagine a Prussian nobleman who came to Žilina region to build a place for his passions. His presence here has left a mark that continues to this day. Although we do not know much about his personal life in these places, the very existence of the manor house testifies to his ambitions and the fascinating influence that the Slovak country had on him.
Kunerada Castle is not just an old building. It is recognized as a national cultural monument of the Slovak Republic. This means that the State has recognised its historical, architectural and cultural value. When you look at the building, you see not only walls and roofs, but a witness to the changes that have passed through our country during the last century. From the Prussian junior to the period of regime changes to the present, when this place is open to visitors.
You may be interested in one interesting thing that gives this place a sense of mystery. Consider why in 1916, in the time of the bloodiest war in the history of the world until then, someone would invest money and energy in the construction of a luxury hunting residence in a small Slovak valley. Was it trying to escape reality? Or the desire for silence and peace when the world was burning around them? It is this contrast between the time of creation and the peaceful atmosphere that you now feel here that forms an invisible but strong aura of this place.
Let us go slowly now and perceive the silence that reigns in Svitach's valley. Notice how light crosses the treetops and hits the walls of the manor house. This place is teaching us to slow down. In today's collapsed world, the Kunerad castle is a reminder of the time when luxury was defined by silence, proximity to nature and the possibility of disconnecting from the world.
As you continue to go around the area, try to imagine how people in period costumes went through over a hundred years ago, how hunters sounded here, and how evenings were spent by the fireplace in the warmth of these walls. Although we do not know all the details of every day that took place here, the architecture tells us that there was a place for rest and meditation.
Before I say goodbye and leave you in the acompanyvana silence of this valley, I suggest you go through the whole area with an open mind. Let your curiosity guide you. Look at the details that may be leaking at first sight and see the atmosphere of a place that has survived over a century of history.
Thank you for accompanying me to this brief introduction to the story of the Kunerada Castle. Now it's time for you to get to know this place in your own rhythm. Let yourself be swallowed up by the beauty of Svitačova valley and enjoy your stay in this historic area. I wish you a pleasant and inspiring walk. Goodbye.
