Lake Hodrus Water reservoir
Dolné Hodrušské lake, also known as Dolnohodrušský tajch, is a water reservoir in Štiavnické vrchy in the cadastral area of the village Hodruša-Hámre. This technical monument from the 18th century is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of Banská Štiavnica and its surroundings.
The need for the construction of the tajch arose as a result of the drop in the flow of the Hodrušský stream, which caused the drainage of rainwater from Pohronie to Poiplie by the spring system supplying Vindšachtovné and Richnavské tajchy. The original intention to increase the capacity of Upper Hodrušský tajch was replaced by a project of a new work prepared by Samuel Mikovíny after consultation with Adjunkt Matej Zipser. Preparatory work started in June 1743. After reaching the height of the dam of 14 meters, the secret was launched a year later. The projected level of 20 meters reached the dam after an increase in 1786.
The building is a ground sprinkled heterogeneous tank with a crown length of 199 meters and a maximum width of 5.7 meters. The altitude of the crown of the dam reaches 528 meters, the maximum depth of the tank is 21 meters, and the total volume is 641,000 cubic meters. The construction and division of the dams are identical to Rozgrund. The water from the tank was powered by water pumping and mining equipment, later by Pelton turbine with a dynamum. The system of drive springs, several dozens of kilometers long, brought water to mines, huts and steps in Hodrušská dolina to Žarnovica.
Ownership relationships to the secret have changed. Until 1981, the building was owned by the state enterprise Rudné mine Banská Bystrica, then passed to the administration of the Slovak water company, from the plant Pododie Hrona. Currently, the water of the tajchu is supplied by the factory of the company Slovenská Banská, spol. s r.o. which processes ore from the Rozalium mine.
The tajch has undergone repairs to the discharge equipment and dam in 1786, 1824, 1960, 1966 and 2008. The large-scale renovation started in September 2013 and the tank was re-launched in spring 2021 after its completion.
Lower Hodrušské lake is currently used for industrial purposes and recreation.

Welcome to Lower Hodrus Lake. Right now you are standing in a place where history of mining engineering meets the calm water and surrounding nature. In front of you lies the water surface, which is not only a picturesque stillness, but above all a witness to the extraordinary technical understanding of our ancestors. When you look ahead to yourself, see this peaceful level, which once played a key role in the lives of local miners and in the development of the mining industry in the region.
This precious work, which we rightly admire today, originated in the eighteenth century. At a time when mining operations in Hodruši-Hámroch were at the top of their fame, it was necessary to provide enough energy to power mining equipment. This is why the construction of the secret system began, including this Lower Hodrušské lake. Preparatory work on this grand project started in June 1743. Samuel Mikovíny, who worked closely with Matej Zipser to create the project, stood behind the entire technical proposal. Their joint efforts have resulted in a work that still fascinates experts and lay visitors with its precision and functionality.
If you take a closer look at the dam itself, which holds the water in front of you, note its majesty and strength. Its height is 20 meters, which is a truly admirable performance for that time. The castle has been designed to withstand the flood of water and to fulfil its important function for generations. It is fascinating to realize that this work was built without the modern technology available to us today, yet it has endured for centuries. Due to its exceptional value and technical importance, the Dolné Hodrušské lake is rightly listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a recognition that belongs not only to the building itself, but also to visionaries who have been able to implement it in difficult terrain.
Looking at this water reservoir, you may wonder what stories relate to people who work here daily. Samuel Mikovíny, whose name is inextricably linked to this place, was the real genius of his day. His ability to tame and exploit natural elements for the benefit of mining was revolutionary in the eighteenth century. As you walk around, try to imagine the noise that prevailed during the construction, and later, when the lake began to serve its purpose to the full. The water from this secret was vital to mining machines that were able to draw water from the depths of the earth to enable the mining of precious metals famous for the region worldwide.
It is unbelievable what harmony this technical work is creating today with the surrounding country. Though built as a purely purposeful building, it eventually became a natural part of the local scenery. Many visitors are not even aware that beneath this peaceful surface, there is such a sophisticated system that, at the time of its creation, was the tip of European engineering. It is this combination of utility function and aesthetic action that makes Hodrušský dolný jazero a place worth exploring deeper.
We hope that you are interested in this short look into the past and that you will look at this technical monument with different eyes as you walk around the lake. We recommend you to go to other trails in the area, which can lead you to other secrets and reveal the complexity of the entire mining water system, which is the pride of Banská Bystrica region. Thank you for listening to this story and wish you pleasant moments spent in this historically important environment. Our common path in the footsteps of ancient builders ends here, but for you discovering the beauty of Hodruše-Hámrov is just beginning. Goodbye.

Thematic route
As no specific surroundings were mentioned in the entry, the following route focuses on discovering the area and immediate surroundings of the main destination.
1. Hodrušské lower lake (water reservoir) This historical mining work, also known as the secret, is the main objective of the route. Visitors here can admire the technical maturity of our ancestors and enjoy the peaceful water level surrounded by the stiavnica nature.
2. Castle and technical elements of the tank (technical monument) Walking along the crown of the dam offers a detailed view of the massive structure that used to drive mining machines in the past. It is an ideal place to understand the functioning of a unique water system in this area.
3. The immediate surroundings of the lake shores (natural area) Surroundings of the reservoir provide space for a short walk along marked trails bordering the water surface. It is an ideal place to observe local flora and relax in a quiet environment, which is directly connected with the history of mining in the village Hodruša-Hámre.
Seasonal recommendations
The spring near Hodrušská lower lake brings a gradual awakening of nature, when surrounding greenery begins to color and the water level reflects clear blue sky. The atmosphere is peaceful and fresh in this period, ideal for meditation by water without a rush of tourists. I recommend choosing layered clothing, because spring weather is variable and close to the water level can be noticeably colder. The best time to visit is morning when light is soft and ideal for shooting technical monuments in contrast with fresh vegetation.
Summer is the time when the lake revives and offers pleasant refreshment on hot days. The surrounding landscape is fully developed and dense forests provide enough shade for those seeking shelter from the direct sun. In the main summer season, more visitors are to be expected, so it is better to go to the tank early in the morning or evening, when the atmosphere is most peaceful and the light golden. I recommend light sports clothes and strong shoes that allow you to walk around the dam.
Autumn transforms the surroundings of Hodrušský lower lake into a colorful palette of shades, creating a mysterious and melancholy atmosphere in the morning fog above water. This period is perfect for lovers of peace and photographers who appreciate the dramatic light conditions and the low sun. Since the days are shrinking and temperatures are falling, do not forget a warmer jacket, a cap, and waterproof shoes, as the terrain around the area may be wet and slippery after rains.
Winter gives this historical water structure a special charm, especially when the lake level is covered with ice and the surroundings are covered with a snow blanket. At this time the atmosphere is very quiet, even meditative, while the clean air and contrast of white snow with the dark elements of the dam stand out best during bright winter days. Quality winter clothes, including gloves and warm shoes with non-slip soles, are essential when visiting. The best time to visit is around noon, when the sun is highest and can warm the frozen landscape for at least a moment.
