Welcome to Toughness. Right now, you are standing in front of a place that testifies to the ancient efforts to protect this city and its inhabitants. Before you lies the city fortification, namely the modern Bastion fortification. When you look at it, you may only perceive fragments of ancient fame, but in reality you are in front of a strategic element that was meant to define the security of the entire area in its time. Feel the atmosphere of this place and imagine how these lines in the past separated the inner life of the city from the unknown and potentially dangerous world of the outside environment.

Although the exact chronology of the creation of this fortification is not exactly documented today and the names of architects who designed it remained in the forgotten history, the Bastion system represents the top of the modern war architecture. By the time the method of war had changed and the gunweapons had entered the foreground, the old, tall, and thin wall walls, which were prone to ruining by heavy artillery, were no longer sufficient. That's why the bassions were built. These are the protruding parts of the fortification that formed the shape of an asterisk. Their main goal was to remove the so-called dead zones, that is, places directly under the wall, where attackers could hide without being seen or able to intervene.

Now that you are studying the surroundings, take note of the very concept of this system. Although the time and modernization of the city changed the original appearance, you can still feel the logic of the Bastion arrangement. Note how these structures were designed to cover each other with fire. This is the principle of flaming, which means that one of the bassions could have prevented them from shooting towards the neighbouring basthion, thus creating an insurmountable obstacle for anyone who attempted direct invasion. Look at the overall timetable and try in the spirit to complete the missing parts of this defensive ring.

It is fascinating that we cannot exactly name the specific personalities behind its construction. This is often the case with city fortifications, where it was not the work of one great artist, but the collective effort of military engineers and thousands of workers whose names were not recorded in history. But it is this anonymity that gives the place a kind of secret. Who stood here centuries ago? What soldiers were carrying out their guarding duties here, and what were they thinking when looking from the graves of the Basthions to the distance of the land of Orava?

It is in this unknownness that the greatest mystery of this place lies. In the absence of detailed records of specific battles or sieges directly linked to this particular fortification, it remains a question for us whether it was fully used in battle or served primarily as a psychological deterrent. It often happened that the very presence of a massive Bastion system discouraged the enemy from attacking, as the cost of his conquest would be too high. The hardwoods could have been protected by the fact that their defenses looked insurmountable rather than by the fighting itself.

Let us slowly move on from detail to whole. See how this historical fortification is associated with the modern city today. It is a fascinating contrast between the military rigour of the past and the peaceful rhythm of the present. These walls long ago do not protect the city from cannons, but protect its memory and identity. They are a silent witness to the development of architecture and the changing needs of the people in the region.

Before I say goodbye to you, I suggest you spend a few more minutes silently and looking around. Try to imagine what this space would look like in case of danger, when military troops would move around and the air would be tense with anticipation. It is a place that teaches us humility towards time and reminds us that nothing is eternal, but the traces we leave behind can survive centuries.

That concludes our short tour of the city fortification in Tvrdošín. I hope you took the time to feel the spirit of this historical monument. Now I am inviting you to further explore the city and its beautiful streets. Let it burn in Tvrdošín and let the history of this fascinating city continue to inspire you. Have a nice day and a good trip to other discoveries.
